Are web memes the new 'political playing field'?
    #17329796 -

Do you think the web memes are changing the way we think as a society? Is this new trend the biggest thing thats happened since the computer revolution? Or is it just fallacious sophomoric rhetoric without a credible source?

Changing the way we think? Maybe. The biggest thing that has happened since the computer revolution? I don't think so.

This all depends what you mean by internet memes of course.

It might be changing the way some people think. As in those who heavily partake in their creation and viewing.

But if there is a change in thought occurring it is one of heavy simplification and logical fallacies. I've noticed that memes also tend to appeal to the idea of 'common sense' (whatever the fuck that is).

To me it seems like I can say something online and no one will give me any credit or think twice about what I said. However if philosoraptor says the same thing half the internet is re-posting it by the next day. Seems to me that these fictional meme characters hold more credibility than most humans do.

Seems like for the masses who do not read or watch TV that their source of pre cooked thoughts might be coming from Willie Wonka and friends.

There has gotta be some huge money being dumped into this.

"I can haz a respectable Republican Party?"
"Problem, Democrats?"
"Obama is Gangnam style."
"This is why we can't have nice things."
"TROLOLOLOLOLOLO"

Memes are reflections of society's progress. The Internet has brought people together in townhouse-style ways from the comfort of their own home where they can discuss what is important to them. As such, the sayings and phrases of the Internet have worked their way into reality, and ego the political field.

Take for example that Obama "Hope" printing. That's spawned numerous parodies and eventually became the iconic design for the 2008 election on and offline. It is not just the Internet influencing reality, but reality influences the internet.

Granted some of those townhouse places are the darkest corners of Hell materialized on this earth, but most are where like-minded people can meet and discuss ideas relevant to their interests (*cough* Shroomery *cough*).

I am finding people re-posting points of view that I would have not expected from them. For example I am finding my previously completely anti drug family re-posting pro marijuana memes. Have these memes really catalyzed a change of opinion in them? and when a person re-posts a meme does that mean they have subconsciously adopted that opinion? I feel like there is a lot of power behind these seemingly stupid forms of presentation. If I say something people don't really care... but if I make the dos equis guy say the same thing people share it and take notice... It is as if the dos equis guy is loaning me his credibility...Mind you that this is taking into account that most people are brain dead.

Oh god, that reminds me of an earlier craze here in California. A couple of years back when rappers started introducing the phrase "Purp" and "Purple" to the mainstream apparently (I am not too familiar with the scene currently), pretty much everyone under the age of 40-50 knew what they were talking about. But the parents... not so much. So you had a whole lot of teenagers and some very square older folks walking around with shirts that say "Got Purp?" and what not. They though it was a harmless, weird kid thing.

Of course once they found out what it really meant, those shirts disappear fairly quickly from young and old.

... I fear for this world. I really do.

As my example showed, it's not that they adopt the opinion. Rather, they are too ignorant to actually know what the fucking meaning is behind it. And once they do, well they are both shocked and appalled. But occasionally, it can make some people think about it. But don't get your hopes up.

I feel like satire will always be the playing field. Memes are just extremely convenient mediums.

satire must be fought at all times, for there are some sociologists who believe they are better tools for understanding culture temper than all other anthropological and archaeological devices; that is to say that recorded satire is populist voodoo and powerful.

in my own opinion.

"The" new playing field, no. "A" new playing field, yes.

Only as part of social networking in general, which would seem to be where it's at. Hell, even the pope tweets now.

I say we have to come up with a new way to talk about cultural variation without the concept of Meme there are serious drawbacks to the concept of "meme" anyone who reads Dawkins carefully will find out he coined the term meme as an equivalent to genes in the cultural realm or the epigenetic realm but genes and memes have very little in common, i think Dawkins' concept of selfish gene as the ultimate unit of self interest is bunk and we should discard meme as well but a new concept to explain an individuated unit of cultural variation would be best

I was thinking that the Christ might be a meme.

I see many of these web memes to be a way for people to give their opinions credence vicariously through other personas. I wonder how our subconscious sorts out this information.

Nothing new here. It's just another way to do a political cartoon.
