Intervention Dilemna
    #1715016 -

Here is a tough moral dilemna after the passing of a second brother on these boards:

When a personality seems fractured, wounded or unstable; what is one to do? If someone jumps in to call for help too early and the member-in-question was merely have a rough week, then one's trust might seem betrayed when the member was merely venting. However, when the dsyfunction appears ongoing (and most here are NOT psychologists - so how do we judge?) what is our responsibility as a community?

The proof is in the pudding.

Well clinically it is said if depression lasts for over two weeks, you should go to a doctor. I think pills are overly prescribed and should not always be used. However if severe depression or severe obsessive compulsive disorder, pills can be very helpful.

If I understand your message correcly...
I think our responsibility is within the realm of the forum.
I'd hate to have the police (just an example) called on me just cause
I talked about being suicidal on a message board. That would really
break the trust and might push one over the edge. I think all we
can do is try our best to help the person within the community
and if they indicate a clear desire to be helped further than we could
proceed as such.
Hope I understood your message and this wasn't Non Sequiter (sp ?
sp checker is dead).

i think we ought to talk to them... and make sure that we give them support... talk to them off the message board... off the computer if we see it in need. and maybe we should network to our other members to see what they think. If problems persist with an individual... we should continue to keep up... and if it starts to slow down... walk them through it and have them cool down... and keep updates.... but other than that... it seems sadly there are somethings we dont have control over.

...what is our responsibility as a community?

Well, seeing how this is merely a forum - there is no physical, representative entity - I'm not sure we're any more responsible than the mentally ill person's family and friends.

To identify the person without their consent would require illegal hacking and whatnot. On top of this, would we (who? how many?) then have to actually track down this person and physically drag them to a hospital? Is this burden really ours? There are probably several mentally ill people who live in our own neighborhoods.... should we be more responsible for our shroomery friend over our neighbor?

On a realistic note, many of us pleaded with ViBrAnT to seek medical attention. If anything, we helped point him in the right direction. Some here might've done more for him than anyone else in his life. An open ear does alot. It's sad... but ultimately, the Shroomery and it's members (from what I have seen) should NOT be held responsible (assuming no one here egged him on).

I wish I could've teleported to his location a year ago and put him in Baker Act.
