What gives with the "Big Bird Controversy" bullshit?
    #16965275 -

Today in my college cafeteria I caught a fleeting glimpse of the news on a TV and there was some bullshit about "Big Bird controversy".  I also think I read an article about it on Yahoo or something.  Somewhere I read an article that asked the reader if they really wanted to elect a President that liked Big Bird.

I saw bits and pieces of the debate last night and personally saw the part where Romney talked about cutting public funding to PBS.

How literally fucking stupid does the media have to be to make such an ASTRONOMICAL deal about something that doesn't even matter?  Are they really this fucking stupid?  Or are they just starving for media material so bad that they are willing to go this far for a story.

This would be like a starving African in the Gobi desert sucking a dick just so they could survive a little longer off of the nutrients in the cum.

Sorry for the gross analogy but that's the way I view this.

Does anyone else really think this way about Mitt Romney's Big Bird analogy - that it was meant literally?

I have no clue, didn't see the debate but facebook (god I need to get off gay ass facebook) was overran with the whole big bird topic. That was like the main fucking thing people were focused on.

The American public (by and large) is stupid. The media makes a living off of that stupidity.

Hence... news for the masses.

This is one of those times.

It wasn't an analogy, he's seriously going to cut PBS and anything else that he deems to be not "critical" which means a lot of things that are beneficial to our society in ways that he cannot understand. No more sesame street or other educational programs for children. They can watch the shit that's on Nick or Cartoon Network.

Good. The feds should not be funding television shows/networks.

This.  I think this thread is a testament to the failure of the education system.  I shudder to think that it could get worse if funding is cut.

You do know that government subsidies only account for about 15% of sesame streets fundig right. Don't get your panties in a twist big bird ain't going anywhere. Besides I agree, it's not the governments job to provide us with luxuries. If it was I'd be demanding a gold plated corvette and a plate of caviar spread on my dick by playboy bunnies every night.

Except one can look at the huge increases in education funding and see no real improvements in the educational system and results.

Obviously, unfortunately lots of kids have shitty parents. It's not about the TV show anyway, it's just about the fact that Mitt Romney would cut anything he deems unnecessary, and his opinion is pretty different from what the American public actually wants.

there is only one reason things are so abhorrent in this economy... and that's unheeded spending.

spend on social programs when you're the one doing the spending. no need to have "Big Bird" doing the managing for everyone.

1st. Romney can't just cut whatever he wants. If you believe he can, your knowledge of the system is seriously lacking.

2nd. Seeing as the polls are pretty much even, I'd say he has a grasp of what half the American people want.

Personally I just found that moment of the debate funny because it harkens back to one of my favorite Toby moments on The West Wing:

Hamlin: [on why the government should cut funding to PBS] Product licensing for this merchandise brings in over $20 million a year, none of which goes to PBS, all of which goes to the show's producer, the Children's Television Workshop. Now this is a company whose chief executive earns high six-figures in salary and benefits per year. Yet Sesame Street is subsidized by taxpayer dollars.
Toby Ziegler: It's a perfectly reasonable complaint.
Sondra: And?
Toby Ziegler: I don't care.
Hamlin: Toby...
Toby Ziegler: We're gonna see to all those things. In the meantime, at a time when the public is rightly concerned about the impact of sex and violence on TV, this administration is gonna protect the MUPPETS! We're gonna protect Wall Street Week, we're gonna protect Live from Lincoln Center, and by God, we are going to protect Miss Julia Child!

So yeah, the people producing Sesame St. got a cushy deal, but that doesn't mean PBS as a whole is raking in the dough. If it weren't creepy and blatantly unconstitutional to require people to watch Frontline I would be all for it, a real news program is worth it's producers' weight in gold these days.
