Bird of the day!
    #2602970 - 04/25/04 11:03 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

well, for all you fellow ornithologists in the house and birdnerds alike, raise your hands in the air!

For those of you that don't give a shit, get ready! From now on everyday I'm going to post a picture/little bio on a different bird of North America in this thread so you can become bird lovers just like me!

I developed a love and interest in birding when i was a young kid, constantly putting out birdseed in our house in the woods, noticing, and drawing birds. Just a few years ago i went on a wilderness course where i kept a bird journal on the many different birds i observed.

I want to share my love with birds with you guys!

We're going to start with the american avocet.

Name: American Avocet
Features: As you see in the pic! Upturned bill, thin long legs, very cute
Call: High pitched, cute weeee weeeee very distinct.
Where to find: American Avocets commonly are found on mudflats, in saline lakes, in fresh water and saltwater marshes and on coastal bays. Also in the great basin desert area (I saw them in teh great basin desert, up in the utah/wyoming area on some lakes/mudflats)
Cool Fact: The male helps incubate the egg more than the female for the first 8 days! :whoa:

It looks like you could snap off their beaks like a toothpick

If so, I want one. That'd be one rare toothpick. Maybe I could even start a business that sells bird beaks to rich people

The only thing good about birds is eating them, same with mushrooms

Lapwing Vanellus vanellus

Lapwings are easily identified wading birds, medium sized, black and white with white faces and a long upright crest. In flight, the floppy, rounded black and white wings make them unmistakable.

Call: pee-wit (that's why the lapwing is called a Kievit in Holland.)

A Dutch tradition is to find the first lapwing egg. The finder of the first egg receives a silver lapwing from the official representative of the queen. It's so "important" in Holland that it is shown on the nationwide news.

Last July I had 2 bands, 20+ people campout for the weekend. Anyway, Sunday morning, folks trying to wake up, :yawn:hangin' out at the firepit by the creek, American bald eagle flies right down the middle of the creek, spins around in mid-air, swoops down and snatches a trout! Everybody saw it. I couldn't have BOUGHT a cooler thing to have happen.Looked like a PBS documentary.

these are a few of the birds I see frequently in my yard...

blue herron... I have these guys in my pond for about 8 months each year

RedTail Hawks are always overhead... I love watching them
because for birds you can tell they know how to have fun.

Wild Turkeys... I'm getting ready to plant some millet to attreact more to the house

Doves... my neighbor always wnat me to let him shoot them here... no chance

being in NW Ga, Inever expected to see seagulls but after hurricane opal... we have an abundance at our lakes and landfills....

Humming birds are viscious and quite territorial... we had one that killed a crow, everyone thought it was west nile until the got close enough to see the humming bird

Apply to the DEP for a public access permit {it's free! }. They used to be for fishing the reservoirs, but now they allow some hiking, birding at different access points. Watch out for those DEP police, they LOVE their jobs.

Cliff swallows are some of my favorite birds!
Features: You'll never see these birds standing still! In big groups they swoop, dive, and flit here and there, you'll most likely only see their shadow, that or if you get close enough their white bellys, or pale orange rump. Colors vary depending on season and sex.
Where to find: Spread throught North america!
Cool fact: These birds are unique in that they are the only swallow that builds mud nests you can find under bridges, barns, cliffs. While kayaking down the greene river in utah we saw tons! Last summer while landscaping there was some that nested under a building ledge i was working on. These quick, chirpy birds are pretty and fun to watch fly about!

I'm going to hit three common blackbirds with one stone today (pun intended:D) spread throughout NA. :sun:

Brewers Blackbird

Features: If you see smallish black colored birds a lot, these are most likely what they are  They are flocking birds.
Voice: Very unique! Cool to listen to, aswell. Note, a harsh check. Song is a harsh wheezy que-ee or ksh-eee, like the creaking of a rusty hinge.
Where to find Limitless locations, bouncing around in your lawn, powerlines, everywhere. Note female is a brown color! Male black with yellow eye, in direct light green/purple glint to it.

Redwinged Blackbird

Features:Beautiful bird! Black with red wing (male juv) or red/white/yellow wing. Female brown.
Where to find:You'll see these birds around ponds/marshes and others bodys of water throught NA!
Voice:Loud, annoying, friendly sounds
Cool fact:Some males assist with the feeding of the young, but their chief role is to defend vigorously the nests and nesting territories.

Yellow Headed Blackbird

This bird is fun to spot because its head is so bright!  You'll most likely spot this bird sitting amongst reeds in a pond or marsh. Remember, its found commonly around bodies of water throughout the US, so don't mistake for orioles or meadowlarks! (also in same family!) It'll flock with other blackbird species.
Cool fact:They 'dance' on the banks to attract a mate and then stay throughout our hot summer before heading south to Mexico for the winter.

birds are really cool, i remember well when i lived in christiania, denmark, the birds there are very tame, more than usual. every morning i smoked my first joint at a cafe called nemoland, and at the same table at the same time everyday came the same bird, it had a deformed foot so it was an easy bird to reconize. birds are really cool

Maybe you can help me...
Is there an owl that preys on other birds? I was out walking my dog just an hour ago on this meadow, where I saw a flock of seagulls circling and screeching madly. I also saw a bigger silhouette that was making swoops at them, which looked like an owl. However, it was quite dark and I only saw it occasionally against the moon. To my knowledge owls prey on small rodents and such, am I mistaken?

Shit, OTD is corrupting me... back on topic - I'll take a digi-cam out tomorrow and snap some pictures of some of the birds that have started showing up around here... can't tell you their names or anything like that, but can show some nice pictures!

owls will definitely prey on smaller critters including other birds (injured, juvenile)! The silhouette of an owl flying is very distinct, its actually sort of funny looking because its out of proportion. Its long wings make large flopping up and down motions, and its head is just a stumpy brown looking thing

ah, i miss finland in the summer! my parents are going this summer, but plane tickets are very high this year. I'll have to wait until next year it i guess.

Krishna- Thats awesome! I'm eager to see your pictures!

Have you seen the documentary Winged Migration? It follows the migration patterns of a number of different birds, it's a really beautiful movie.

oh wow... this is my favorate thread ever. Maybe because im studying ornithology. I could go on and on and on raving about birds. Jenny, i think i love you.

btw... whoever posted the "seagull" is pollitically incorrect. There is no such bird. That pic is actually of a herring gull. The humming bird is either a female ruby throated or broad tail (hard to tell from that picture). The "dove" is technically now called a "rock pigeon", they recently changed the name from "rock dove" (commonly just called a dove).

Im actually leaving next tuesday to spend a week at backbay national wildlife refuge banding all sorts of migratory song birds and shorebirds and with any luck another periguin falcon or 2. Ive recently been doing alot of owl banding and last month successfully caught and banded 3 short eared owls, before then only 1 had ever been caught in all of VA. Pretty exciting stuff.

I once saw a squirrel take down what I think was a robin (red breasted small bird of IL...?) ... it was pretty cool.

P.S. Every so often in our 'relationship' (for lack of a better term.. i mean the time that we've known each other through this place) you say or do something that makes me feel those confusing feelings that can only be described as a 'crush'...... for some reason this whole bird thing is one of em.

Todays birds are GOATSUCKERS! or nightjars.

I picked my 2 favorates, the whip-poor-will (left) and the chuck-wills-widow (right).

These are nocturnal birds with ample tails, large eyes, tiny bills, and very short legs. They usually sleep on the ground or horizontally on limbs throughout the day, and are difficult to spot due to their camoflauged "dead leaf" pattern. Notice their long rictal bristals they use to catch insects on the fly. They are easiest identified at night by voice.

The first time i ever saw a chuck wills widow it scared the shit out of me. I had been calling for one all night and on my last net check i shined the flashlight in the bottom teir of the net and saw a large white throat gasping back at me. I knew for sure a cottonmouth had somehow gotten into the net. I grabbed a stick and approached it, to find it was a chuck wills widow. These tiny birds can open their beaks wide enough to fit a soda can inside. Theyre harmless though.

Great Tit Parus major

In Great Tits the typical black and white face pattern is embellished by a broad black stripe which runs from the throat down the middle of the bright yellow belly. This characteristic black and yellow pattern is boldest on the males and duller on the females but is still visible even on the juveniles.

Breeds and winters in woods, parks, orchards, hedgerows and gardens.

haha! In conjunction with your post I present:

Bushtit

Identification:Long tail, short bill and dull plumage make the bushtit unlikely to be confused with any other bird.
Cool Fact:The taxonomic placement of this tiny resident of the West and Southwest has changed over the years. Once thought of as two or even three species, all Bushtits are now considered one. This species has been removed from the titmouse and chickadee family and, together with six Old World species, is now placed in its own family, the long-tailed tits.
Where to find:You can find these cute guys ranging from Southern BC down through the S and SW US all the way down to Guatemala. They are most common in the United States in the West Coast states, especially in the oak woodlands of California's Sacramento Valley and along the coast and in the semiarid scrublands of the Southwest (I spotted some of these guys in Sedona while camping). They also occur in the Rocky Mountains up to 2,440 meters, and in the savannas of the southern Great Plains.

Woodcock

Identification: It looks like a hard cock, no just kidding  :eyemouth: Large dark eye, explosive takeoff long bill, dumpy looking.
Where to find: Woodlands and shrubby fields
This woodcock will probe for earthworms in old fields and thickets.
Cool Fact:Woodcock watching is a favorite activity of many birdwatchers each year but it is only possible during the courtship period, from late February until late April. In short, grassy openings surrounded by thickets and young woodlands, the males engage in unique aerial and terrestrial performances at dusk and dawn for the purpose of attracting females.  The males spirals up to a great height, circles and then plummets down to the ground ending in a "falling-leaf" flight twittering as he descends and walking stiff-legged to the female.

I was young but it still bothers me when i think about it because i had to chase it down so it wouldnt suffer anymore cause i had only winged it :frown:

my friend accidentally shot down a wood duck which he thought was a mallard, very illegal

I have a pretty interesting story my spiritual guide told me today about when he used to live in Florida. He had a lot in the woods and a house with his family and 8 cats.

One summer they decided to remove a dying tree on their property, and sawed it down, only to see a great figure of an owl swooping out of a huge bucket sized nest they hadn't noticed, needless to say the nest came crashing down and all the eggs got smooshed and the poor owl renested a half acre away.

That summer, the owl would swoop at them (the family) while they were outside, and at night pick up their indoor/outdoor cats, fly up 60 feet or so, and drop and kill them.

After killing 7 cats and 1 remaining, a calico named fluffy, the two animals were in constant battle. Fluffy would go to the top of the roof with its paws firmly planted in a stately manor, and the owl would swoop at it. The noises they made at while in "battle" at night were hideous.

Fluffy survived until they eventually moved.

hehe owl revenge

Sometimes its hard to distinguish between a woody n a Mallard because they fly the same...A Drake Wood is to pretty to shoot anyway...when i do hunt its mainly Redheads or Pintails so i never see any Woodys..
They have a Sandhill Crane season but they mate for life and are just way too cool to shoot...they have the most wonderfull sound when they are conversing in flight....there is no way i would shoot one of those and they outta be illegal because they are really close to a Whooping crane...I have actually seen whoopers twice in my lifetime because they winter on the Tx gulf coast region

To go along with the great tit, and bushtit, here is my favorate tit:
the tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor)

male and female titmice look alike. the upperparts are all gray, and the belly and breast are a lighter gray or white. The flanks are chestnut or rust in color. the crest is gray, the forehead is black, and the area around the eyes is light gray.

this bird finds a mate and they often stay together for more than one year. the pair then defend their territory year round.

wood ducks are quite common around here, and are legal game birds. I got one this year. male Pintails in breeding plumage are in my opinion are the most handsome duck, they look like theyre wearing suits. Dont see too many of them around here though.

Another bird death story.

One time me and a few friends were having some beers in this kids back yard and shooting at squirrels with a pellet gun. Not that we wanted to hurt/kill any of em, we were mostly just shooting near them and watchin em freak out and take off. We were drunk and it was all very funny. Anyhow a pigeon (bird-rat) landed on his fence and this kid Brandon picks up the gun and shoots it straight in the eye. We were like 30 yards away and this kid hits it so perfectly (with a pump powered little 12 year old's rifle thing) that there was no entry wound, save his eye socket. Needless to say the bird was dead on impact and just fell off the fence. No fluttering wings, no attempt to fly off, just dropped like a feathery rock.

The moral of the story? Beer + Guns (even air powered pellet guns) = Death

Today i'm doing Jays which are actually members of the crow family!

Bright and bold, blue jays often travel in noisy family groups in late summer and fall. Their arrival at a bird feeder tends to clear the area of smaller birds. Blue jays are known to eat the eggs and young of other birds and often frighten the adults off the nest by imitating the call of a hawk.

I absolutely love these birds because they are cute as all fucking hell. They are bigger, with a white head and chubby cheeks. They hang out in mountain regions (I spotted tons at a bird feeder in the mountains in Idaho)

Stellar Jay

This bright, colorful noisy and gregarious bird
Cool fact: Steller’s Jay has the most extensive range of any North American jay, from Alaska along the coast to central California, and through the Rocky Mountains and high mountain areas of Central America to Nicaragua.

Pinion Jay

Where to find:The pinyon jay can be found from central Oregon and Montana south to central Arizona, New Mexico, and northwestern Oklahoma. Pinyon jays do not migrate. Find em in the pinion pine, juniper trees, joshua trees, furs, redwoods, spruces, etc.

Decided to take a pic of this little guy this morning. He was singing when i woke up, or chirping rather. A common yellowthroat (juvenile). Member of the warbler family, nice little birds, Ill probobly band hundreds of these guys (warblers in general, not just the COYE) next week.

Anyway, If this is a male he'll grow up to look somthing like this:

ID: Small and dumpy, short neck, small bill, round wings, rounded tail. Always shows contrast between dark malar and pale throat.
