Last July I had 2 bands, 20+ people campout for the weekend. Anyway, Sunday morning, folks trying to wake up, :yawn:hangin' out at the firepit by the creek, American bald eagle flies right down the middle of the creek, spins around in mid-air, swoops down and snatches a trout! Everybody saw it. I couldn't have BOUGHT a cooler thing to have happen.Looked like a PBS documentary.

these are a few of the birds I see frequently in my yard...

blue herron... I have these guys in my pond for about 8 months each year

RedTail Hawks are always overhead... I love watching them
because for birds you can tell they know how to have fun.

Wild Turkeys... I'm getting ready to plant some millet to attreact more to the house

Doves... my neighbor always wnat me to let him shoot them here... no chance

being in NW Ga, Inever expected to see seagulls but after hurricane opal... we have an abundance at our lakes and landfills....

Humming birds are viscious and quite territorial... we had one that killed a crow, everyone thought it was west nile until the got close enough to see the humming bird

Apply to the DEP for a public access permit {it's free! }. They used to be for fishing the reservoirs, but now they allow some hiking, birding at different access points. Watch out for those DEP police, they LOVE their jobs.

Cliff swallows are some of my favorite birds!
Features: You'll never see these birds standing still! In big groups they swoop, dive, and flit here and there, you'll most likely only see their shadow, that or if you get close enough their white bellys, or pale orange rump. Colors vary depending on season and sex.
Where to find: Spread throught North america!
Cool fact: These birds are unique in that they are the only swallow that builds mud nests you can find under bridges, barns, cliffs. While kayaking down the greene river in utah we saw tons! Last summer while landscaping there was some that nested under a building ledge i was working on. These quick, chirpy birds are pretty and fun to watch fly about!

I'm going to hit three common blackbirds with one stone today (pun intended:D) spread throughout NA. :sun:

Brewers Blackbird

Features: If you see smallish black colored birds a lot, these are most likely what they are  They are flocking birds.
Voice: Very unique! Cool to listen to, aswell. Note, a harsh check. Song is a harsh wheezy que-ee or ksh-eee, like the creaking of a rusty hinge.
Where to find Limitless locations, bouncing around in your lawn, powerlines, everywhere. Note female is a brown color! Male black with yellow eye, in direct light green/purple glint to it.

Redwinged Blackbird

Features:Beautiful bird! Black with red wing (male juv) or red/white/yellow wing. Female brown.
Where to find:You'll see these birds around ponds/marshes and others bodys of water throught NA!
Voice:Loud, annoying, friendly sounds
Cool fact:Some males assist with the feeding of the young, but their chief role is to defend vigorously the nests and nesting territories.

Yellow Headed Blackbird

This bird is fun to spot because its head is so bright!  You'll most likely spot this bird sitting amongst reeds in a pond or marsh. Remember, its found commonly around bodies of water throughout the US, so don't mistake for orioles or meadowlarks! (also in same family!) It'll flock with other blackbird species.
Cool fact:They 'dance' on the banks to attract a mate and then stay throughout our hot summer before heading south to Mexico for the winter.

great thread jenny

birds are really cool, i remember well when i lived in christiania, denmark, the birds there are very tame, more than usual. every morning i smoked my first joint at a cafe called nemoland, and at the same table at the same time everyday came the same bird, it had a deformed foot so it was an easy bird to reconize. birds are really cool

Maybe you can help me...
Is there an owl that preys on other birds? I was out walking my dog just an hour ago on this meadow, where I saw a flock of seagulls circling and screeching madly. I also saw a bigger silhouette that was making swoops at them, which looked like an owl. However, it was quite dark and I only saw it occasionally against the moon. To my knowledge owls prey on small rodents and such, am I mistaken?

You lived in Christiania, Shriek? Wow! If I try to think of all the hours I've spent playing chess in Maanefiskeren... :rasta:

Shit, OTD is corrupting me... back on topic - I'll take a digi-cam out tomorrow and snap some pictures of some of the birds that have started showing up around here... can't tell you their names or anything like that, but can show some nice pictures!

owls will definitely prey on smaller critters including other birds (injured, juvenile)! The silhouette of an owl flying is very distinct, its actually sort of funny looking because its out of proportion. Its long wings make large flopping up and down motions, and its head is just a stumpy brown looking thing

ah, i miss finland in the summer! my parents are going this summer, but plane tickets are very high this year. I'll have to wait until next year it i guess.

Krishna- Thats awesome! I'm eager to see your pictures!

Have you seen the documentary Winged Migration? It follows the migration patterns of a number of different birds, it's a really beautiful movie.
