oh wow... this is my favorate thread ever. Maybe because im studying ornithology. I could go on and on and on raving about birds. Jenny, i think i love you.
btw... whoever posted the "seagull" is pollitically incorrect. There is no such bird. That pic is actually of a herring gull. The humming bird is either a female ruby throated or broad tail (hard to tell from that picture). The "dove" is technically now called a "rock pigeon", they recently changed the name from "rock dove" (commonly just called a dove).
Im actually leaving next tuesday to spend a week at backbay national wildlife refuge banding all sorts of migratory song birds and shorebirds and with any luck another periguin falcon or 2. Ive recently been doing alot of owl banding and last month successfully caught and banded 3 short eared owls, before then only 1 had ever been caught in all of VA. Pretty exciting stuff.

I once saw a squirrel take down what I think was a robin (red breasted small bird of IL...?) ... it was pretty cool. ~Kriz P.S. Every so often in our 'relationship' (for lack of a better term.. i mean the time that we've known each other through this place) you say or do something that makes me feel those confusing feelings that can only be described as a 'crush'...... for some reason this whole bird thing is one of em.

Wow I never saw a yellow headed blackbird before. I like the red winged ones a lot. I love how they pirch on a reed and sway back and forth in the breeze.

Todays birds are GOATSUCKERS! or nightjars.
I picked my 2 favorates, the whip-poor-will (left) and the chuck-wills-widow (right).
These are nocturnal birds with ample tails, large eyes, tiny bills, and very short legs. They usually sleep on the ground or horizontally on limbs throughout the day, and are difficult to spot due to their camoflauged "dead leaf" pattern. Notice their long rictal bristals they use to catch insects on the fly. They are easiest identified at night by voice.
The first time i ever saw a chuck wills widow it scared the shit out of me. I had been calling for one all night and on my last net check i shined the flashlight in the bottom teir of the net and saw a large white throat gasping back at me. I knew for sure a cottonmouth had somehow gotten into the net. I grabbed a stick and approached it, to find it was a chuck wills widow. These tiny birds can open their beaks wide enough to fit a soda can inside. Theyre harmless though.

Great Tit Parus major
In Great Tits the typical black and white face pattern is embellished by a broad black stripe which runs from the throat down the middle of the bright yellow belly. This characteristic black and yellow pattern is boldest on the males and duller on the females but is still visible even on the juveniles.
Breeds and winters in woods, parks, orchards, hedgerows and gardens.

haha! In conjunction with your post I present:
Bushtit
Identification:Long tail, short bill and dull plumage make the bushtit unlikely to be confused with any other bird. Cool Fact:The taxonomic placement of this tiny resident of the West and Southwest has changed over the years. Once thought of as two or even three species, all Bushtits are now considered one. This species has been removed from the titmouse and chickadee family and, together with six Old World species, is now placed in its own family, the long-tailed tits. Where to find:You can find these cute guys ranging from Southern BC down through the S and SW US all the way down to Guatemala. They are most common in the United States in the West Coast states, especially in the oak woodlands of California's Sacramento Valley and along the coast and in the semiarid scrublands of the Southwest (I spotted some of these guys in Sedona while camping). They also occur in the Rocky Mountains up to 2,440 meters, and in the savannas of the southern Great Plains.
Woodcock
Identification: It looks like a hard cock, no just kidding Large dark eye, explosive takeoff long bill, dumpy looking. Where to find: Woodlands and shrubby fields This woodcock will probe for earthworms in old fields and thickets. Cool Fact:Woodcock watching is a favorite activity of many birdwatchers each year but it is only possible during the courtship period, from late February until late April. In short, grassy openings surrounded by thickets and young woodlands, the males engage in unique aerial and terrestrial performances at dusk and dawn for the purpose of attracting females. The males spirals up to a great height, circles and then plummets down to the ground ending in a "falling-leaf" flight twittering as he descends and walking stiff-legged to the female.

my friend accidentally shot down a wood duck which he thought was a mallard, very illegal I have a pretty interesting story my spiritual guide told me today about when he used to live in Florida. He had a lot in the woods and a house with his family and 8 cats. One summer they decided to remove a dying tree on their property, and sawed it down, only to see a great figure of an owl swooping out of a huge bucket sized nest they hadn't noticed, needless to say the nest came crashing down and all the eggs got smooshed and the poor owl renested a half acre away. That summer, the owl would swoop at them (the family) while they were outside, and at night pick up their indoor/outdoor cats, fly up 60 feet or so, and drop and kill them. After killing 7 cats and 1 remaining, a calico named fluffy, the two animals were in constant battle. Fluffy would go to the top of the roof with its paws firmly planted in a stately manor, and the owl would swoop at it. The noises they made at while in "battle" at night were hideous. Fluffy survived until they eventually moved. hehe owl revenge

Sometimes its hard to distinguish between a woody n a Mallard because they fly the same...A Drake Wood is to pretty to shoot anyway...when i do hunt its mainly Redheads or Pintails so i never see any Woodys.. They have a Sandhill Crane season but they mate for life and are just way too cool to shoot...they have the most wonderfull sound when they are conversing in flight....there is no way i would shoot one of those and they outta be illegal because they are really close to a Whooping crane...I have actually seen whoopers twice in my lifetime because they winter on the Tx gulf coast region

To go along with the great tit, and bushtit, here is my favorate tit: the tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor)
male and female titmice look alike. the upperparts are all gray, and the belly and breast are a lighter gray or white. The flanks are chestnut or rust in color. the crest is gray, the forehead is black, and the area around the eyes is light gray.
this bird finds a mate and they often stay together for more than one year. the pair then defend their territory year round.
