What gives with the "Big Bird Controversy" bullshit?
    #16965275 -

Today in my college cafeteria I caught a fleeting glimpse of the news on a TV and there was some bullshit about "Big Bird controversy".  I also think I read an article about it on Yahoo or something.  Somewhere I read an article that asked the reader if they really wanted to elect a President that liked Big Bird.

I saw bits and pieces of the debate last night and personally saw the part where Romney talked about cutting public funding to PBS.

How literally fucking stupid does the media have to be to make such an ASTRONOMICAL deal about something that doesn't even matter?  Are they really this fucking stupid?  Or are they just starving for media material so bad that they are willing to go this far for a story.

This would be like a starving African in the Gobi desert sucking a dick just so they could survive a little longer off of the nutrients in the cum.

Sorry for the gross analogy but that's the way I view this.

Does anyone else really think this way about Mitt Romney's Big Bird analogy - that it was meant literally?

I have no clue, didn't see the debate but facebook (god I need to get off gay ass facebook) was overran with the whole big bird topic. That was like the main fucking thing people were focused on.

The American public (by and large) is stupid. The media makes a living off of that stupidity.

Hence... news for the masses.

It wasn't an analogy, he's seriously going to cut PBS and anything else that he deems to be not "critical" which means a lot of things that are beneficial to our society in ways that he cannot understand. No more sesame street or other educational programs for children. They can watch the shit that's on Nick or Cartoon Network.

This.  I think this thread is a testament to the failure of the education system.  I shudder to think that it could get worse if funding is cut.

You do know that government subsidies only account for about 15% of sesame streets fundig right. Don't get your panties in a twist big bird ain't going anywhere. Obviously, unfortunately lots of kids have shitty parents. It's not about the TV show anyway, it's just about the fact that Mitt Romney would cut anything he deems unnecessary, and his opinion is pretty different from what the American public actually wants.

there is only one reason things are so abhorrent in this economy... and that's unheeded spending.

spend on social programs when you're the one doing the spending. no need to have "Big Bird" doing the managing for everyone.

1st. Romney can't just cut whatever he wants. If you believe he can, your knowledge of the system is seriously lacking.

2nd. Seeing as the polls are pretty much even, I'd say he has a grasp of what half the American people want.

Personally I just found that moment of the debate funny because it harkens back to one of my favorite Toby moments on The West Wing:

Hamlin: [on why the government should cut funding to PBS] Product licensing for this merchandise brings in over $20 million a year, none of which goes to PBS, all of which goes to the show's producer, the Children's Television Workshop. Now this is a company whose chief executive earns high six-figures in salary and benefits per year. Yet Sesame Street is subsidized by taxpayer dollars.
Toby Ziegler: It's a perfectly reasonable complaint.
Sondra: And?
Toby Ziegler: I don't care.
Hamlin: Toby...
Toby Ziegler: We're gonna see to all those things. In the meantime, at a time when the public is rightly concerned about the impact of sex and violence on TV, this administration is gonna protect the MUPPETS! We're gonna protect Wall Street Week, we're gonna protect Live from Lincoln Center, and by God, we are going to protect Miss Julia Child!

So yeah, the people producing Sesame St. got a cushy deal, but that doesn't mean PBS as a whole is raking in the dough. If it weren't creepy and blatantly unconstitutional to require people to watch Frontline I would be all for it, a real news program is worth it's producers' weight in gold these days.

I know that he can't, obviously, but he can still have a say in the direction the country goes and he can push for cuts that he wants. Most of Romney's supporters are people who vote straight Republican. None of his supporters know exactly what cuts he wants anyways because he never really says specifics and he flip flops so much that it's hard to say where he stands on the issues.

I would really argue that up until last night (the first debate) the majority of people even paying attention to the race are die hard partisans and politics junkies so we're still a few days away from seeing polling numbers that really reflect the state of the race (places like Gallup which use a rolling model take a few days to show movement in the numbers).

So, because he has a different vision than you, he "doesn't say anything".

It seems you just don't want to hear.

Hopefully, a majority of people do.

Do you realize that the very complaints you make about Romney, are the same type of complaints others make about Obama?

Stop talking as if ALL Americans agree with you.

I know all Americans don't agree with me, I'm sorry if I came off that way but I'm very cognizant of that fact. I'm consistently met with opposition on this site alone when I talk about politics and the people on this site align with other views I have that are very counter to what most of America thinks.

One of my problems is that Romney wont give any specifics as to what he plans to do while Obama definitely does give specifics and we've seen his performance anyway. It's not about Romney having a different vision than me, it's about the fact that he doesn't have a vision. He's been constantly contradicting himself throughout this whole campaign and throughout his entire political career and to stop doing that it seems like he's clammed up, probably at the suggestion of his advisers, and wont spill what he wants to do for our country. In the debate last time he was constantly talking about how he's going to do all the good things that Obama has done and none of the bad but he's not giving a realistic plan for how he will make that work.

I don't know why you have to be so combative, I'm just having a discussion.

Did you read what I said? I said I know America does not agree with me. Less than half of America agrees with all of my views.

Yup. I read what you said. Clearly, you don't grasp the meaning of words, so I bolded what you said for you. Read it and weep.

Quote:
Combative because you're telling me to grow a spine and you insist upon putting words in my mouth.

They're your words. I didn't make you say them, nor did I put them in your mouth.

Your words show where your thought processes are fucked up.

You want free stuff, you want it now, you don't care who pays for it.

As long as it's not you.

It's not about me wanting free stuff. I have taken on thousands of dollars in loans that I will need to pay back. (which is irrelevant to this thread, but I can tell you feel the need to attack my character) I have literally no money to contribute. When I'm raking in a couple hundred thousand dollars a year I'm going to be donating most of it to my community, charities and scholarship funds. I'm all about giving back. I volunteer instead of working because I'd rather help others than make money.

You said: "Your beliefs aren't what half of America believes."  I basically agreed with you and stated that Americans disagree with me about even more things and you're saying I'm claiming to know what all of America believes? I'm actually just saying that I'm one individual and a nation full of people is going to disagree with me more than they agree with me.

You're trying to entrap me with words and no matter what I say you're going to try to attack me and twist my meaning. People like you make the internet and society as a whole more negative.

My intent is to change lots of things, I don't know what you're referring to exactly. I've already had a positive impact on the people I interacted with during all of my volunteer experiences and most of the little money I do have goes towards good causes such as charities around my town. I'll be giving back so that students like me can afford to go to college and hopefully will be able to allow other students to do the same.

I do plan to enact more change than just that but first I'll need to establish some credibility for myself, hence getting the degree and becoming an educated professional.

Sesame Street has turned into a left wing indoctrination show as has most of the other PBS shows. At one point in time, they actually did a fairly good job at being a neutral public broadcasting network, but they have been bought out and overrun with radical leftists. That is why right wingers want to cut funding. What once was a channel for the general public has become a bullhorn for the left wing agenda. They don't even show old Doctor Whos anymore.

The Big Bird thing is like all the other spin going on...

Here are some paraphrased statements

The president was tired
The president had a hard time at 5000ft altitude (Al Gore)
More of the things that this election are about like reproductive rights weren't brought up.
The president didn't strike back with his strong points like the Romney %47
Romney lied.
Romney twisted facts.
The moderator sucked...
'Big Bird'
The president wasn't prepared because he has been busy working on issues
The challenger always gets a bump
Debates don't mean anything

The reality:  The loudest thing that came out of that stagefest was the sound of Obama getting spanked.

Undoubtedly there are many people in my life who have helped me get to where I am and there are many people who will help me to get where I will be. As has been mentioned PBS has been overrun with radical leftists so it is more like indoctrination than education. Its time for the commies to meet there maker.  :sniper: Or at least lose all funding!

Are you suggesting that the majority-idiot-populace of America (the theme of this thread) home school their children?  That makes me shudder just thinking about it.

You can relegate Sesame Street to "some prancing giant bird on the idiot box" all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that it contributes to the development of young minds by creating and reinforcing critical thinking situations in proven models that work to mentally stimulate children in ways that most parents are unable.

Yeah I agree with this.

I'm not necessarily saying PBS or Sesame Street deserves public funding.  But I'm tired of hearing that "Do It Yourself" and stop relying on other people attitude - it is way overused.  We don't live in a "DIY" economy.  In fact, the general nature of an economy is not DIY.  The purpose is to do one thing that you are good at it, and trade that for other things, so that you don't have to do everything yourself.

Yes we have a lot of dumb people, including parents, in this country.  But it is not necessarily a failure on parents that they cannot educate their children efficiently.  Just as you would not say "Build your own house" or "manafacture your own car" to someone, it is just as ok to pay

Also I wonder, back in the day, before all the taxes, all the government programs, the government putting their hands in everything, deciding this and deciding that--I'm surprised anyone survived the carnage of those days. :smirk:

One book that springs to mind is Life, Inc. by Douglas Rushkoff.  He basically documents how these things came to be.  Pretty interesting book.
I'm speaking of the taxing and such, not of the utility of PBS.

Why cut funding to PBS? It's one of the better places to watch television. How much money are we talking about any way? It can't be much when you compare it to the defense budget. I mean it plays to Romney's base so I get why he said it but really PBS is the enemy here? Sounds like smoke and mirrors to me.

Funding PBS is not a power the constitution gives to the Feds.

No show/network should receive Federal funding. It doesn't matter if it's a single dollar.

yes, because right wing ideology is the past. If we keep following right wing ideaology, soon corporations will own all our wild lands, the divide between the rich and the poor will become even greater, and our military will continue to grow, while social program after social program is cut. Things like pensions and benefits will cease to exist for the working class. Welcome to the brave new world. I suppose the positive would be that it could act as a catalyst for revolution.

They may argue this or that but at the end of the day all they care about is perception not reality. Votes are what count the most and getting re elected is their job. There's a reason a phrase as vague as "general welfare" was included under the federal taxation and spending powers (Art. I, Sec. 8) - unless they're actually infringing on state or personal rights it was intended to mean whatever the congress wants it to mean.

LOL well at least your honest about were you stand. As for corporations being evil entities that do no good you are dead wrong. They employ thousands of workers and raise the standard of living for all. Not sure why they would cut pensions as another company would provide a pension plan and people would work for that company. I'm not saying capitolism is inherently wrong. You are absolutely right that it has brought us many great things. I have mixed thoughts honestly on the whole corporation issue. Honestly, corporations are generally better equipped to offer reasonable benefits and things like that compared to small businesses who often don't.

I'm just saying that they need to be regulated is all. We can't just hand the world over to the super wealthy owners of a few corporations and expect that they are going to respect our nature and people. That's what I'm trying to say.

No, what brought us many great things were two things in particular:
A. Cheap energy
B. Technology

I don't know what the solution is honestly.  Centralization, if used in line with human needs and wants, could be very effective.  On the other hand it could be quite destructive.

If you only look at the world in extremes, sure. If you realize that neither the market nor the government always knows what's best, you'd realize it's a bit too heavily stacked in favor of the former in this country.

Are you kidding me the government calls most of the shots corporate bailouts crony capitalism its ridiculous. Why would anyone ever want a an overbearing centralized authority ordering there life the way they deem fit. Thats the end game of the left to allow government to govern every aspect of our lives from cradle to grave.

Right and instead you are in favor of more bureaucracy, because that's better. There's not enough red tape strangling businesses anyways.

He already said a few posts back that the federal government shouldn't be meddling things and they should be left to the states to make the laws.

So I believe Blind Sophist is a closet libertarian. :awesomenod:

PBS is so far down the list of concerns it is mind boggling the massively more important things they are trivializing by focusing on that.
