IMO religious people aren't happier, they just displace their real-life fears and anxieties into a fantasy world. The only tangible effect is that they easily ignore their personal problems, instead ascribing the unease they feel to mythological fantasies. At some point they made the decision that it's just easier that way, and oftentimes they're right.

The ultra-religious people are that way either by upbringing or by severe psychological distress. I'm tolerant of moderately religious people because we've all got problems and we can't all deal with all our problems, but it is kind of like mass psychosis, and when it goes too far it can hurt people.

I'd say less happy if anything. Most people I know who are religious seem to be using religion as a crutch.

I wish I could bring myself to believe we are a worthy creation rather than the fact that we are just a "mistake" of nature/evolution without any purpose other than apparently fucking everything up and fucking each other over in the pursuit of so called happiness.

But that IS the fun part. That IS the happiness.

For most people it seems like a coping mechanism.

Religious people are happier.

It's easy to see why.  Most religoius people believe in an a paradise-like afterlife where they are reunited with their loved ones.  This is more appealing than the "lie in the dirt and rot" fate envisioned by the non-religious.

If you're dead, there's nobody to have the experience of lying in the dirt and rotting...

It's a mistake to assume the lack of belief in an afterlife implies an abyss. And besides, I'd prefer sleeping forever over reincarnation in paradise. Once you get to paradise, you either spend the whole time dwelling on your life or you just become a different person in the absence of all your fears. The whole reincarnation as yourself in a perfect place where everybody is happy thing is just silly the moment you start to actually envision it. The type of person who could be happy with a fantasy like that would have to be seriously miserable and repressed to begin with.

I take it as a given that there's no way of knowing what's around that corner. You could live between dread and misery, or you could focus on getting the most of your mortal existence, because all you know for certain is that it's fleeting and what comes afterward can't be characterized or predicted. How does that philosophy make a person less happy than assuming that life sucks and everything gets better when you die? That's like trading five pennies for a hundred dollar bill because you don't know better, or worse, because somebody used highfalutin nonsense to convince you copper and zinc are about to skyrocket in value.

I don't know how depression is even possible when you believe there is an eternally blissful post-world after we die. I'd blow my brains out if I thought that which is the reason I think most religious people are full of shit. It doesn't make sense that they continue trying to live when death brings something amazing.

A lot of them also conveniently believe that if you kill yourself you go to hell.

Death is scary, and no belief is gonna change that IMO.

That's my point. Religion is a potentially harmful coping mechanism for unhappiness.

Why is a rule like that necessary if religious people are all so happy-clappy hunky-dory? They're fucking miserable, and false promises help them pretend they have something to be happy about.
