The reverse is more likely - an ex pharmacist becoming an addict.

Being a drug addict in the industry of pharmaceuticals is a liability to the company and its customers.  This 'discrimination' isn't what you people are making it out to be.  You're acting like they're judging someone for their race or religion.  You can't deny that if someone's got an addiction problem there is a far higher risk of them stealing drugs from the pharmacy than if someone doesn't use them at all- after all, why would someone who doesn't have an addiction problem steal the drugs?

And alcohol/drug use does affect your performance while working.  Even if you aren't stealing anything, if you're high on say suboxone or you're tweaking on speed, you make a mistake giving someone a prescription and end up killing them.  This may happen do to just random accident, but chances are higher when you're not in a clear state of mind.  Even alcohol is banned from use while at work.  When you're addicted to a drug, who's to say you're not going to take it while on the job?  :p

Actually, its illegal to discriminate against drug users or ex-addicts.

Ohh right.... That is why pre-employment drug testing is illegal. It is not illegal to discriminate against drug users. It is actually government mandated in the United States that drug users not be allowed to do certain work, and governmentally encouraged that drug users be denied employment.

In the US its not illegal, where I'm from it is.

We don't have any interest denying jobs to addicts. It would only increase crime and result in them going to jail. That wouldn't be fair.

Therefore, its illegal to discriminate against drug users.

with the US it's not a government interest, it's an insurance one. insurance
companies dont want to ensure for any liability, any company that hires drug
users which is why the tests are mandatory in many places, other pay the
higher premiums and dodge the testing because they know many of their
applicants and even best workers use drugs. the real drawback at least for
the user is that if you get hurt, they'll test you for workers comp and it
may not pay

Prisoner #1, I disagree. DOT regulations require that certain people be randomly drug tested. That is government mandated drug testing.

The governmental encouragement comes in the form of discounts on governmentally required workers compensation insurance premiums for participating in an approved drug and alcohol testing program. So the government requires that you have this insurance, and then offers you discounts for drug testing. Sounds like governmentally encouraged drug testing to me.

testing sort of puts drug users in check.
All the idiots wont be a danger to others since they dont wanna lose the job, and if they fail for something they DO lose it. no jobs really test for shrooms or acid, and dmt is untestable pretty much, so just stick with those or mescaline/rc's if you'd want.

every job should have a week of guaranteed no testing maybe every month so that people can have some fun, get it out of the system, and keep working without doing it on the site and risking safety

If there's no record of you being a junkie then there should be no problem.  That said you have to do well for two semesters of chemistry, two semesters of organic chemistry, two semesters of calculus, and some biology and physics, among other things.  Then get into pharmacy school and get through that.  Good fucking luck

This is actually kinda the track I'm on right now... ideally I want to do brain research, but it was the idea of pharmaceutical research or failing that, simply working with drugs that initially got me interested. :drugnerd:

I never took school seriously before a couple years ago, but I'm now working on calculus 2 and organic chemistry 1. Not the weak shit, the real shit. It's intense, but surprisingly fun.

You should go for it if you're interested, ellen. There are plenty of practical applications and different paths available after mastering the essential sciences, and science is kinda better than drugs in the end anyway. :awesome:

Drug testing in my opinion largely unfairly targets cannabis and cocaine users. Opiate addicts can get prescriptions for many of their drugs of choice and get off scott free from drug tests. I'm not sure how specific amphetamine tests are but a prescription for ritalin or adderall might be able exempt meth addicts from positive tests. While cocaine is schedule two I don't think anyone is going to be able to show a prescription for that to get out of a positive drug test for cocaine, and even in states where medical marijuana is legal many places still consider a positive drug test for cannabis with a doctors recommendation grounds for disciplinary action. If this was truly about safety these exemptions for prescriptions wouldn't exist. Just because a doctor prescribes you oxy for your herniated disk doesn't mean your opiated ass is any less of a danger than someone who took some oxy for fun.

I had thought that rehabilitation centers and clinics could not share information about their clients. If they are there because of breaking the law it is a different story obviously.

Correct me if I'm wrong shroomery...

it is pretty unfair and "sick" how weed stays in someones system 10x longer than anything else..even IF cocaine was targeted, it would be out of the system in a few days at the latest. They dont test for adderal or any other add/adhd meds. I was tested after getting a felony, a pretty bullshit case of being young (14), not knowing much and not being too bright, yet they tried me as a fucking adult, and i still cant get a license because of it. They tested for:

benzos
ethanol
pcp
i thiiink ketamine
barbituates
amphetamines/methamphetamine
cocaine
thc
opiates

they now start testing for spice products and maaaybe salvia, but cant really keep up with the new batches

I have a friend that was an addict that became a nurse, ended up stealing narcotics and I knew a pharmacist that had a pill problem that had to stop working.  Its a horrible idea, most people can't do it successfully.  Lots of people in the medical community struggle with it, I wouldn't suggest it.  That being said though, not all pharmacists work with narcotics.  You can always get a job with a drug manufacturer, insurance company, schools, FDA, etc.
