Anyone here a pharmacist?

So I was thinking about a little thing I like to call my future, and what I want to do about those things people call careers, and pharmacy came up. So I guess what I came here to ask, was if anyone here went to college to study pharmacy, and has anything to say to people considering it. Or, if anyone has some advice on other carrer options for a soon to be 19 year old, who was seriously considering going to art school, but is now seriously reconsidering his plan of action, your advice is welcome too.

Not a pharmacist, but I think it would be an interesting career. Here is a link for the University of Colorado and their curriculum for a docotor of pharmacy professional degree. Looks tough, but not too tough

It's not incredibly hard, but you do have to be fairly intelligent to get a pharm D. It pays well, but it's really boring work though. You're basically a pill counter and you don't put your knowledge to use very much.
Not a good career if you're liable to abuse opiates and amphetamines for obvious reasons.

depends,
pharmacist =lots of school work for a while, but most likely a guaranteed job.
artist= some easy ass school work and lots of drugs, but most likely you will not get a job

haha, that means no "testing the viability" of the xanax and oxy when no one is looking

Nah, I've never messed with opiates or amphetamines. I'm more interested in hallucinogens. and pot. But I just thought it would be an interesting career field, because I don't think it is limited to just counting pills behind a counter. They do indeed make a lot of money, which is a good thing to have usually. I was thinking about how an artists life is very similar to a musicians life, in that its no gauranteed job and can be very difficult to manage. So I figured, maybe I should find a real job, so that I can actually enjoy art and musical instruments. also sort of looking for a job that wouldn't necessarily throw me out of all drug use, like mushrooms and pot.
What jobs does everyone else have? I know that there have got to be some shroomers here with "real" jobs, that you get a degree for. so what are they? and why did you choose to study that?

the jobs most people take right out of rx school are usually chain rx's and you are just a bean counter. high stress and boring. burns alot of good people out. there are many more rewarding paths to take with an rx degree. PharmD's are supposed to be all clinical and stuff out of school but in the end you learn most of what you need to survive in the real world.
school is heavily science based and a person should be prepared to be fairly dedicated to graduate. i might suggest trying to get a part time job at a pharmacy as a tech or helper to get a feel for it, but remember there are alot of other paths in the field and retail is just one, and a limited one at that

My original major at school here was Pharmacology and Toxicology, but I've since changed because I just cant cut the math. Lots and Lots and Lots of math involved.

I was going to be an actor (and still play with the idea of trying to do it professionally, but probably won't). I even have an AA in Theatre. I've had lots of people tell me I have the looks & talent but I just don't feel like waiting tables for years trying to 'get a break.'
Now I'm working towards a degree in social work. I like working with people. I think I'll have to move to California or Canada though, I'm way too liberal for my area (bible belt).

You should also consider that it is a 5-year program. I took a couple of pharm classes and they are far from easy. Also you have to take classes higher than a 3 semester calculus and a differential equations class is ridiculous IMO anyway.

Nice Tantalus.. I have my BSW, but am currently not working in my field. I went into Social Work at the advice of a friend. I always saw myself in a counseling job, and was going to get my PhD in Psychology, but my friend (who is a Social Worker & his father is too) suggested that I get a 4 yr degree and try it out, vs 8 yrs and learn that I didn't like it. I LOVE my field. I went into medical social work since I wanted to work with people more short term, vs chronically unhelpable people. Also, I didn't want to work for any government agencies, cuz they eat you up and spit you out.
Go with what feels right to you, since your job is a huge part of your life. You should like what you do for a living, makes living alot easier. Good luck.

annielicious, so are you not in medical social work now? Sounded like you weren't but you said you weren't in the field.
I see myself getting a LCSW and working in a couseling setting. Who know what I'll really end up doing though, I've changed my mind so many times.

I know a couple of people in pharmacy programs, and am looking into it myself. It's definitely a competitive program where I am. I've asked them about career options, they've said besides retail, drug companies, research, specialties (just cancer patients, just diabetics, nuclear pharmacology,) and the list goes on. I think it's sweet that you're guaranteed 75K out the doors, even if it is retail. Drugs are fascinating, so it's something I'm definitely going to look into.
