Pharmacist swiped some meds
    #14760985 -

I keep my medications in a combination safe that only I know the combination to.

I'm a chronic pain patient. My prescription was upgraded last month from 300qty oxycodone 30mg to 360qty oxycodone 30mg and 60qty 40mg Oxy to 90qty 40mg Oxy.

Conveniently, I find myself short 60qty of my 30's and 30qty of my 40's.

I bring my meds to the pharmacy and they count mine. I'm exactly 60 and 30 short. Pharmacist wasn't in so the woman I spoke with checked the books but not physical inventory.

6:01AM the next day the pharmacist calls ME and tells me her physical inventory is fine and I must have lost them, accidentally took too many, miscounted, blah blah blah.

Conveniently, I file a police report and she's now on an "unexpected vacation".

Bitch made off with $3,000 minimum and I've been sick a week. If my pain clinic found out I was short I'd get cut off immediately and without question. Oddly enough the pharmacy is across the street from my doctor and they're supposed to report calls like this to the physician.

The police are ineffective and we're "new" to a town of maybe 1,000 people even though we've been here awhile. It's a serious accusation for pills to go missing from a pharmacy, and a LOT more serious here where your reputation can determine if people plow your driveway, help you after a tree hits your house, etc. Really boonies.

There any chance the cops are even going to follow up on this? I haven't heard anything and there haven't been any arrests.

It's awfully damn convenient three grand of meds disappear and they're not sure when she's expected to return.

I'm over acute w/d's but would fail a pill count. I can't do shit outside of physically harming her and/or her property.

Just... wtf. "Unexpected vacation"? Could that be a hush-hush arrest?

I just want this girl to get what's coming to her. She's in her early twenties, and after being VERY sick, I really think this should ruin her life. That's gotta be multiple felonies.

What else can I do...? Could the cops be keeping it quiet because we're in such a small community in the middle of nowhere? The pharm could have already been on close watch?

Filing a police report was smart.  Avoid doing anything (such as property damage) to get revenge.  Let the police do their job, though it will take forever and will probably never amount to anything.  I would also report her to the state "Board of Pharmacists".  In the future, count all of your medication in front of the pharmacist before leaving.  Maybe have your cell phone recording to catch their reaction if you are short again.  Unfortunately, pharmacists shorting people on pills is a lot more common than most people think.

Thanks Seuss and Snoot.

Property/person damage is out of the question tho, I'm in line for a professorship. But you are right.

In my state there's a law against recording people without his or her consent. It's a class D felony and falls under 'illegal wiretapping'. I suppose an ambiguous question like, "May I make a record of this" would work for recording conversations... but it could also get me arrested or thrown out as evidence.

i.e. A customer was looking to file a small claims dispute against my boss and was recording everything I said during the mess's cleanup. I nearly got fired. She was promptly arrested and a few words were thrown my way and I got to keep my job.

I don't sell my meds or do anything else remotely illegal but I have a PTSD fear of police after a raid I was inadvertently drawn into.

Police haven't contacted me yet but (wifey confirmed) there is an increase in unmarked white cars in our area. No one drives around here unless they live here.

Man I bet they think I'm junkying out :picard: or doing shit I'm not supposed to.

If it comes down to her arrest or charges, I'd assume my pain clinic would understand why I didn't say anything?

I suppose the best way to put it is accusing an Officer of the Year of child molestation in a big city. I simply asked questions and gave my statements, there was no "he said, she said" or "[pharm] must've taken them!" kinda thing. Gave a full and complete log of where I'd been since I received the scripts confirmed by gas receipts, food, etc.

I can't detox again. I'm so tired of it. Between script happy doctors and assholes, this is the fourth time in two years and it's making *me* think and feel like a junky and that exascerbates the pain.

I'm just trying not to be a sad sappy shit that drains everyone's tax dollars because I can. I'm trying my best to be a productive member of society despite what has happened to me physically. It's hard, it hurts, it sucks, and then stuff like this is just :nonono:.

I will never be that guy that collects a monthly check and sits around playing, say, Warcraft or League of Legends whatever, while everyone else busts their ass. Father didn't raise me that way. I'll work until I can't walk anymore.

Think police will be checking me out for awhile? They've gotta hit all angles of such an insinuated accusation and if I was a cop I'd be looking at the "new guy" not the "closest pharmacist for 100 miles that's been here a decade".

I seriously doubt that the pharmacist intentionally stole or ripped you off for  your drugs.

Come on man, reason it out, why would she short change you on your prescription, when all she has to do is walk back to the cupboard and remove what ever quantity she wishes to out of the master supply bottle.

I doubt the police are going to do much, they probably just see you as a fucked up pill popping hypochondriac drug addict who is trying to squeeze more pills out of the system at the expense of someone else career.

Perhaps a mistake might have been made, maybe one of your friends went into your supply and ripped you off. Maybe your mind is so fucked up by the drugs that you ate the pills and forgot about it.

Either way, I find it very pathetic that you would even infer harming her or damaging her property. That is just wrong and fucked up.

> I seriously doubt that the pharmacist intentionally stole or ripped you off for  your drugs.

I disagree.  If the pill count was off, and the inventory was correct, and the OP is telling the truth (no reason to lie), then the pharmacist stole the pills intentionally.  There is a huge market for scheduled drugs, and pharmacists pocketing pills is quite common (unfortunately).  They are usually less blatant about it, taking only a few pills per script to keep from getting caught.

> Come on man, reason it out, why would she short change you on your prescription, when all she has to do is walk back to the cupboard and remove what ever quantity she wishes to out of the master supply bottle.

Doesn't work that way.  The pharmacists have to account for every single scheduled pill that they sell.  If the paperwork doesn't add up, then the DEA comes a knocking with a warrant ready to toss somebody in jail.

> I doubt the police are going to do much, they probably just see you as a fucked up pill popping hypochondriac drug addict

I'm sure that is what the pharmacist is hoping.  However, "fucked up pill popping hypochondriac drug addicts" don't typically file police reports.

> maybe one of your friends went into your supply and ripped you off.

Reading comprehension: "I keep my medications in a combination safe that only I know the combination to."

> Maybe your mind is so fucked up by the drugs that you ate the pills and forgot about it.

That would imply drug abuse.  Given the time frame involved, and the amount of pills missing, I would find it next to impossible for the OP to abuse that many pills and live to tell the tale.

> Think police will be checking me out for awhile?

Probably.  If so, that is a good sign, as it means they are checking "her" out as well.  I would still report her to the state Board of Pharmacists.  It is a bit late to help in this case, but I would also start to keep a log of the time and date of every pill that I took, of every doctor visit, of every prescription refill, etc.  These are things that "fucked up pill popping hypochondriac drug addicts" don't do.  The more you keep records of, the stronger any future case becomes.

Ive been a pill short before, but its always been corrected as being a mistake. And its only one pill. Now if I was short 5 out of 90 I might be a little suspicious.. but 1 pill. I dont even give a fuck. Hope the tech enjoys fucking up their career.. But Im sure its a error and not a theft  ..

I'm sure there are ways around this, have the cellphone recording long before you enter the pharmacy as if htey are just documenting you, act like you have no idea you were expecting something to be off. I'm not a law expert but there are usually ways around things, especially in your situation.

Another good thing to possibly do, if you have a family lawyer or someone who you are friends with that knows the law perhaps consult them, or possibly consider getting an actual paid attorney, express your concerns. cheers mate

what in the fuck are you talking about. should I judge you the way you judge him? perhaps some education would do you well. maybe go back to middle school and figure things out for yourself.

pharmacies dont contain a 'master bottle', its not like there is a huge bottle labled DRUGS XXX in the back and everyone just sticks there hands in and has at it. Its super controlled, almost like a vending machine, you dont get shit until the pharmacist plugs in the Rx, and itll shoot out the pills, then its counted 3-4 times by nurses and ultimately by the pharmacist himself. Plausible deniablity is huge in this situation, all you have to do is leave the pharmacy, and no one knows what couldve happened. Perhaps you dropped one, or 80( :frown: ), or who knows what, soon as you leave that place its hard to get someone to suspect the pharmacist, unless maybe you talk to the pharmacy itself, have them review video, etc... have them talk to other patients tell them to count there pills at the counter. It may seem wild but like Seuss said this shit happens far more then you'd think.

Thats just a HUGE perscription to have to worry about your meds coming up missing if you aren't doing anything illegal with them.  I'd assume hiding from your doctor when your meds come up missing is a sign, but I could just be reading too into this, and I'm always one to call anyone on opiates a liar, so my opinion is shite.

It just seems weird OP gets so many damn pills a month, and talks about people making off with X amount of dollars.  I'd assume with a script like that insurance is involved, and she didn't make out with 3000 dollars of his.

There are always two sides to a story, and I am sure that if the pharmacist was to give their side of the story different facts might surface.

Glad someone caught that ninja edit.  No need to flame snoot, I'm just observing.  Way to discuss

And yes I should be judged the same.  I don't think anyone should just pop up screaming wolf and everyone take their side.  Like I said I am one to call an opiate user a liar right away, so my opinion is biased.  However I think your education is just fine :/

your problem is you associate anyone on opiates as a junkie and a drug abuser, obviously you've never had to deal with pain management or someone who needed narcotics in order to function. Once you go down that road you literally need them everyday regardless if for legitimate reason or from abuse. Its incredibly important for us to trust the people dealing with these drugs, more so then a street dealer, these are respected individuals of which society has faith that they will do their job honestly and with integrity. Pain is a tough cookie, and once you go down the path of narcotic management, if you are caught without your medicine the pain is only going to be compounded by opiate withdrawal, this is totally unfair if it is done by malicious means outside the patients control, and I feel your pain man. I've had relatives in similiar situations, but usually they were just lost or accidentally thrown away, chemo and other treatments can reek havoc on you. Not saying this is anything like your case, but its just sad that people are forced to suffer like this, and the people involved in it, should be punished to the full extent of the law.

again you've probably never ever had to deal with serious pain management or someone who has had to deal with such things. Otherwise you may be more compassionate about the situation. Why would the OP lie? Why would he go threw the trouble venting online if he infact was just abusing them? Obviously there is a chance that that might be the case but it is surely unlikely. I can totally understand someones sentiment towards wanting to hurt those who are involved, unless you've been down that road you really have no place to speak about it, and in the end you just make yourself look like a moron.

I would push the issue.  I would bet if you do not nothing will happen and you will look like the jerk.  A similar thing happen at a bank.  What you need to think is does the pharmacy have cameras?  Most do nowdays.  If they do it should be on tape?  Where are the cameras at?  prehaps you questions should be did you watch the tape or are you covering things up.  That is if they have cameras there.

yeah defintely, either she got careless or something else happened. Is it possible OP that someone might be stealing pills from you? Family member close friend? Even tho you keep them locked, no lock is really 'safe' most lock boxes can be picked in seconds, I know this as I pick locks for a hobby, especially when motived by opiates, you know nothing is impossible, I think its best to consider everything.

It's like a contemporary mom 'n pop pharmacy. But boonies.

No cameras and she's the only one who can fill these. Under lock and key. Confirmed by police when they stopped by today. I actually felt comfortable enough to talk to them and I was surprised. They seemed sympathetic, so I really have no idea what's going on now. It could've been a gig, or they really are.

There are a lot of elderly/disabled people in my area so if this isn't the first time it's happened then they know what's up.

I doubt the bottles opened themselves in the car ride home and 60 fell out of one and 30 from the other as I placed them in my safe.

I spoke with a lawyer today about the issue and it's not the first time he's heard this especially in my area. I can sue for "pain and suffering" which I thought was a really bad pun to chuckle at considering my situation, but apparently fudging the books can even be accounted for.

He reviewed my pain contract and I'm OK. There's no clause or anything that states I will be disciplined for not telling them I came up short, especially considering the circumstances. I guess I just needed to hear it from a professional.

Anyone else working that day will likely be questioned and can be implicated if they know anything of an illegal act happening that day. This is all I know so far.

I should have counted them when I get them and will from now on. The bottles looked like the same amount I normally would get before recent events made the script go up. I figured since it's such a large quantity it was probably just my eyes or they were just settled in the bottle more. Lawyer confirmed that the second you take a step out of the door, you assume full responsibility that "a hundred of what you're holding is a hundred of what you're holding". Unless, of course, someone is legitimately doing something they're not supposed to.

Trust goes an INCREDIBLY long way out here. If you fuck up, you better be ready to call yourself out, admit your shame, and move far the fuck away. Like Scarlet Letter kinda shit and I'm not kidding. Pride, virtue, honor, honesty and other values hold more weight here than anywhere else I've seen in my life.

This isn't something I jumped the gun on and ran crying to police about. This is a "big fucking deal" and "took a lot of balls" to even go to the police. Even if the pharmacist IS guilty, I might be even seen as the guy that "got poor innocent [Pharm] put away" and might have to move myself. People hold incredibly strong convictions out here.

I hope understanding the gravity of this situation sheds some light on why I'm seeking advice.

I don't understand why I'd post this for legal questions (recording) or advice (police report, board of pharmacists) if I sold my pills or took exactly 60/30 (accidentally, on multiple occassions) to add up to that number amount.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Getting flamed at least gives me a viewpoint on how other people might perceive this situation.

@snoot - 4 people know I'm on pain meds. Doctor, pharmacist, me and my wife. We're not very social people and never have company. I'm going over everything in my head as to how these things could go missing but I just can't figure anything else out. Wife clearly knows the rules having this stuff in the house. I dunno, at this point I'm proud of myself for doing something. The old me wouldn't have done shit and just taken it.
