Any pharmacists (or people in the field) here?
    #8803574 - 08/21/08 01:32 AM (9 years, 7 months ago)

Hey, what's up fellas.
Long-time reader/lurker, finally starting to post.

I'm a somewhat recent PharmD working for a big chain, just wondering if there were any people on here in the same field.
The only other thread on the subject was a few years old, so thought I'd ask anew.

Please no "d00d get me some Xanacks"

I was going to apply for an assistant pharmacist but I wasn't sure if you needed schooling or what they actually do. Do you happen to know?

I'm more of a "behavioral pharmacologist".  Not a "pharmacist".

Haha, jeez guys, I'm still around, I just can't sit around and check responses to my forum posts all day long.

OK there were a few questions posed, I'll try to hit the big points, just shout if you need more specifics.

Now to be a pharmacist, you need to get your doctorate (PharmD) which takes a minimum of 6 years after high school graduation. Pharmacy school is 4 years, and most pharm programs highly recommend a bachelors degree before starting, but technically there are only 60 credit hours (2 years) of specific classes required before enrolling in pharm school. To give you an idea on acceptance rates, in my year, there were about 1500 applicants for 150 spots. You weren't really considered unless you had 85th percentile or higher on the PCAT (similar to MCAT for medicine) and a pretty decent GPA.

The program is tough and covers a lot of ground. We learn a majority of the same stuff learned in med school (believe it or not, they train us to be more than "bean counters" even though that's what many ppl end up as) but with more of a focus on treatment principles rather than diagnosis. It's pretty tough, at least at the school I went to - I nailed the PCAT and was used to getting pretty good grades in science without studying much, and was in for a rude awakening. Following graduation, you have to take 2 exams ("the boards") - NAPLEX, which is a pharmacy practice & therapeutics, and the MPJE which is a state specific pharmacy law exam.

How did I decide to become one? I was originally graphic design in undergrad but was very dissatisfied with what I was doing and the job market for it. Was discussing some aspects of drugs and chemistry with a friend who was in pharmacy and he recommended I check it out. Stellar job security, and six-figure pay out of school. There are many intangible reasons why its a good gig though, too. Its healthcare, so you can generally assume you are helping people, and since I was always predominately interested in the drug aspect of healthcare it seemed like the right fit.

To become a Pharmacy Technician ("assistant" was referenced above), you need to be at least 16 (helps if you're a little older), enrolled in high school, and basically be able to learn fast - you need to be able to pick up the computer systems, and become at least somewhat familiar with drugs and brand/generic names, since you're dealing with 1000+ different drugs stocked in a pharmacy.

Sorry, I know that's kinda wordy, but I wanted to cover everything!

Kind of frustrating to see people receiving "doctorates" after just 6 years of school.

So what do you actually do all day?  Fill prescriptions and......?

not quite sure why there are parentheses there... i'm pretty sure i have a real doctorate. how long did you spend getting yours?

do you think a pharmacist is just going to hand you any old pills?
doctors fuck up rather often. so, basically, if you work retail, yeah, you fill, and you also check for interactions, make sure dosage and therapy is appropriate, counsel patients, do MTMS, compound prescriptions, administer immunizations, blah blah blah
/rant
Yeah, retail isn't really complex. Its the most mundane thing you can do with the degree, basically, but it pays the best by a long shot, and the job security is good. The only other chance at the big bucks is working in industry for one of the big drug companies, but that's a hard position to get, and you can't really simultaneously have a conscience and do your job well.
There's a decent chance I'll end up working at the state poison center sometime soon, but I'm not sure if I want to take that pay cut yet...

Not sure if you wanted the serious response or not, but here goes...

If you're talking about swiping em, nah.
When it comes to C-II's, the DEA keeps track of every single tablet. Logs are kept. You've got to fill out a form if one goes missing. It'd be easier to get a prescription from a friendly doctor than get away with it in a pharmacy these days.

As for the more standard pain meds and the C-IV's - the benzos and whatnot, we go through so many of those every day it's ridiculous. It wouldn't be hard to slip some in your pocket, but for me its just not worth the risk, so its never been more than a passing thought. I'm a paranoid dude though
Also we're generally on camera

In any of the basic sciences, 6 years is a masters degree.

A normal Ph.D course is 4 years to a B.S., another 5 for a Ph.D. and about 3 more in a postdoctoral position.  So 12 years is usually the minimum required to gain an entry level position, its common to take several extra years here and there in your studies as well.  This can easily put you around 15 years before you land any type of position (industrial or academic).

Definetly a nice route to job security and a paycheck however.
