But even the rentals you pointed out started at $575/mo.  A person making minimum wage earns $8/hr in California, which is about $1400 per month.  Rental propoerties generally require that a renter earns at least 3 times the rental rate, which means the most rent a minimum wage worker in California can afford is $1400/3 = $470.  Still not affordable.

Those links say nothing about sharing an apartment.

As I pointed out, $575 is still not affordable for someone on minimun wage.

Why the fuck would you try to live downtown in one of the most expensive cities on minimum wage?

Yea, having a bachelor pad all by yourself is not something the poor should be expecting.  Sharing living quarters is the norm for human history.  The notion that you get a pad all to yourself is a new one, and one that is not sustainable for minimum wage workers.

When I moved out on min. wage I had an apt. all to myself.  But it was a studio and the smallest studio you have ever seen.  No separate kitchen even, just an oven and fridge in the single room of living space.

What do you want?  Solid gold toilet seats?  First a gripe that minimum wage can't get one a two bedroom apartment.  Now a gripe that minimum wage can't get one a "decent looking" apartment.  Keep moving those goalposts.

WHOA

 keep proving me wrong Suess. I forgot how awesome minimum wage was to live off of. You are clearly thinking of four people sharing a four bedroom house in shit ville, where the rent for the whole four bed room house is like $1600 a month all four rooms, and each person splits it evenly so it's like $400 a month for each of them.

we are arguing a two bedroom house that needs to be paid for by one person, or arguably a one bedroom under minimum wage. Btw if I plan to eat food, like REAL food, then to be COMPLETELY honest, I need to spend $20 a day, which means for each meal I'm going to be spending about $6.75, which means i'll most likely be eating at burger king for each 3 meals, not an extremely healthy choice. So that's going to be about $140 a week, so for my cost of eating food it's going to be about $560 just for that. So I work a minimum wage job and at 40 hours a week I make approx. $270 dollars, so 270 x 4, approx. $1100 a month. So for $1100 a month minus the $560 for food I'm going to be able to use $540 for rent.

 you guys are REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, convincing me that minimum wage is easy to live on and buy a one bedroom, etc. so far I've given you math. And you've given me OPINIONS on how the bergoise isn't greedy and most people can easily afford to live on minimum wage and are SO MUCH BEYOND WEALTHY compared to starving people in India.

Btw, starving people in India doesn't represent LIVING CONDITIONS. Most of those people are DYING, those aren't LIVING CONDITIONS. Living CONDITIONS are conditions people live in that continue to help them LIVE, understand????

my equation was mostly for $6 minimum wage where 8 hours only equals $48 a day, I may need to re equate for $7 an hour living conditions

Dude...you can eat way cheaper than $20 a day if you cook for yourself...and it can be much healthier than burger king...

I don't know what kind of life you think you're entitled to live with a minimum wage job, but I've been very poor before, and there have been times when living alone in a two bedroom apt and spending $20 a day on food would have been living the high-life for me.

I'm glad I live in the midwest.....Got my first 1br apartment when I turned 18 for just 375 a month... It was a descent apartment complex with about 5-6 different buildings...I ended up living at those apartments on 3 different occasions until I bought my house....Never had a roommate and am glad I haven't... If you are making min wage in a high price town then it is time to further your education or move....

If you are on minimum wage you need to be thinking about hitting up the soup kitchens, not burger king.  You dont have to eat with the bums in the soup kitchens.  You can pay for bags of the dried soup mix and take them home to eat.  I used to make them up when I worked at the soup kitchen.  Not the tastiest but you sure wont starve.

why Jeeves, I do believe you have a found a clue, because the point of what we are arguing is THAT A PERSON ON MINIMUM WAGE CAN'T AFFORD TWO BEDROOMS. Not: A person on minimum wage can't afford two bedrooms in the country

Btw, they don't really have very many apartment complexes in the country do they? But in smaller towns they do, however, they aren't MUCH cheaper, and will still be in the $400-900 a month range.

Damn expensive city, if I worked a minimum wage job there I would live in Oakland.  I lived in SF over summer, and will be back in a year but can thankfully afford to live there.

 last time I called a lawyer I called them at 11:00 a.m., and had to wait until 3:00 p.m. to finally speak to them because they decided to have a 4 hour lunch, so this is funny to me arguing this point to a lawyer, but I'm going to try anyway  :

Ok, ramen noodles = not exactly healthy. But livable on under $20 a day. To actually cook? Have you seen the prices at publix recently? Or for that matter, since I don't know where you live, Albertsons, Winn-Dixie, piggly wiggly? You name it? Corporate grocery store. Ok a pound of meat usually costs AT LEAST $6. Not a ton of meat. Spaghetti sauce, not name brand = at least $2.75. Noodles = at least $2.75, vegetables, usually about .50 cents an ounce, but I want to cook with good vegetables, so I will probably buy

an onion =$1.75
a green pepper =$1.75
a red pepper =$1.75
a carrot =$1.35
garlic clove = few cents
tomato = sometimes up to $2 for a good one
broccoli = sometimes up to $3 for a good bush or whatever
I want some cheese, is that ok? = in the dairy section, often $3.50 with tax for a bag of cheese
now if I want to SPLURGE and get some orange juice, orange juice = $3.75 plus taxes
bread loaf = over $3 that's for sure.

so I cook one meal with pasta and vegetables, and don't buy milk, butter, cooking oil, then yes under $20 I can do it, also I can live on that for a day, if it's all I eat, I have carbs, iron, protein, fiber, vitamins, and will cook enough pasta every day to be able to eat for the whole day. I sure am living frugal here.

Now btw we aren't counting the price of gasoline, because remember, gasoline is expensive, and a car is expensive, and we aren't expecting a minimum wage earner to be able to afford that. So it's bus, and btw cost of bus where I live now is $2.00, a big change from .75 cents in 2001 and an extra .50 every transfer. Now it's $2.00 to get on the bus, and $1.00 for a metro transfer. And btw I don't live in Frisco, where the damn metro tunnel or whatever you call it is like a $1 a mile, and taking it 10 miles costs you $10.

So with all that, I'm still spending about $120 a week on food(cheaply), and still spending about $480 a month total. Or if I could drop down food spending to $110 a week, then I'd be spending only $440 a month on food. Still, that leaves very little left for rent, plus we haven't counted security deposit, water and light bill, if I want basic t.v. cable, price of some basic furniture to move in. Am I missing something? Are you saying if minimum wage earners spend frugally, then we can all save money and come out of the recession mess? We'll just live on bare minimum, but still look rich compared to India and Somalia.

Oh except one thing, if everyone stops buying cars, what of the auto industry, our precious government depends so much on our requirement of buying cars, that if the auto industry goes broke, they'll bail them out for billions, which comes out of our tax payer money in the treasury. Or maybe wall street can start bailing people out, and wall street can get bail out cash borrowed from the treasury. Anyway, it all makes sense, and I should quit arguing huh? Capitalism doesn't depend on capital. It depends on the bare minimum like socialism and communism?

Well anyway, I don't like capitalism, I like democracy, where they say a person should be able to live on the bare minimum and never starve. However, we have a problem here

democracy = capitalism :facepalm:

that is much better then the minimum wage here. Which is $7 an hour. Most people realize here that they can't get a raise past $11 an hour as a secretary, and $11 an hour is almost MINIMUM wage in other places. Although in some cases I've known secretaries and people who answer the phone who've made up to $15 an hour.

at $10 an hour with MINIMUM wage, you will make $80 a day working 8 hours. so 40 hours a week you make almost $500 a week, and make over $1500 a month. Now we are talking about being able to afford a two bedroom. And I'm sure wage laws don't hurt the bay area or San Francisco as a whole for that matter. Despite how many people here say "if you raise the minimum wage to $10.00  an hour it'll destroy business dude!"

I've only been to SF a few times, but have def seen some small businesses there. Despite this THEORY that small business will crumble if minimum wage is set to $10 an hour.

Hardly any landlords will even rent to someone making minimum wage, even if rent is $600, people making minimum wage need roommates, solo living is not a option.

you just have to shop smart and cook.

gardening and foraging can also suppliment meals with very healthy wild food.

Why not just share an apartment?  Two people in an apt is not unreasonable at all.  Don't jump to ridiculous conclusions, your not convincing anybody with that.  Its very cheap to share an apartment.  Isnt that what you and your friends did when you moved out?

The sample rents you provided WERE NOT IN SAN FRANCISCO.

If you want to talk about a $9.92 minimum wage in San Francisco, then you should have provided examples of rental pricing in San Francisco.

Is living in San Francisco on minimum wage a right?   Poor people commute in to work all over the nation.  I've never been to San Francisco but I presume its the same there.  Even more so if San Francisco proper is so expensive.  Property can only demand high rent if rich people are willing to pay it.
