Is the free market "natural"

From the Norquist's Nazis thread....

Quote:

**** Oh that's right - we're all just cogs in a market machine. Silly me, there I was thinking we were individuals with a level playing field.

the rules that govern a free market are similar to the ones that govern biology, physics, and especially ecology. it's just natural man.

What is natural about the free market? Isn't it more accurately the case that the capitalist system borrowed heavily from the abovementioned fields in formulating its ideology?

It might be natural in a society that valued reason over compassion - but isn't part of what makes us human our fellow-feeling? So in that case how can you call a system which guarantees a wealth gap, guarantees a class hierarchy, and guarantees abject poverty and lack of chance for a good sector of the population natural?

Additionally, doesn't the free market lead to oligarchy? Doesn't it directly create an aristocratic class - as wealth is passed from generation to generation, thus starting the chosen few with a silver spoon, and leaving the unfortunates at the bottom of the pyramid to wallow in debt and credit card payments?

yes!

'free market' means a system in which goods and services are allowed to flow freely between consenting individuals without intrusion by force.

No business is interested in a free market. If they can maximise profits by cutting off all competition, receiving massive welfare cheques from the taxpayers and avoiding all concepts of a "level playing field" they will do so. The free market is something they tell the right-wing press. In reality it doesn't exist.

Idealized, "free market" means that, granted. In the world of WTO, NAFTA, etc, it means a lot more and a lot less.
