I was very repulsed by the chicken factories and also I believe when they show this Asian man which appears to be around the mental institution scene I was quite possibly the most scared I have ever been in my life. The look on his face revealed some sort of inner torture that no person should ever have to bear. I'm not sure if you remember, but the shot is followed by skulls stacked on top of one another.

It's just amazing how many cultures there are. We are so alike and so different all at the same time!

The chicken factory was indeed disturbing, but then it's a useful corrective to the idea that the meat you buy nicely packaged in the grocery store just kind of spontaneously generated itself in some laboratory somewhere. It requires the mass production of living beings to produce meat for a mass populace. Actually, the filmmakers sort of pulled their punches with that one. If they really wanted to get to the heart of the matter they would have shown chickens, pigs, and cows as they get slaughtered en masse in the meat factories.

I believe the "mental institution" scene you were referring to was in fact the scene of the Nazi death camps. The Asian man with that unforgettable terrified look in his eyes was one of Pol Pot's victims in Cambodia.

Thank you for the information about the Cambodian man. On another aspect of the film, I absolutely love the nature shots. The volcano, the clouds stirring around like waves in an ocean, the snowcapped mountains. All these locations that I might not get to personally visit in my lifetime just seem so amazing.

I also think this film teaches about cultural awareness (of course) and even tolerance. One might be inclined to see this film and make fun of the images they see, but I personally think that this film can change people's outlook on the world around them. Of course this has to mainly do with how it affect's the individual, but getting to see these images and actually sort of relive them through your television seems to bring understanding and acceptance of everyone's choice of how they live, where they life, what they believe, and why they believe it. At least it did for me.

I must see this movie while tripping! I think it would be such an unreal experience!

Yes, I agree with your comments. The nature shots are lovely. One of the wonderful things about this film is how it juxtaposes light and dark--life in all of its beauty and all of its ugliness and terror. It takes the totality of life on the planet (and the lifeless--who knows?--expanses of the cosmos) into a kind of unconditional embrace, and I think this unconditional embrace is part of what creates a feeling of tolerance and open-mindedness in the viewer. I don't think the film is trying to be preachy about tolerance, in some New Age, I'm OK You're OK, PC kind of way (which kind of thing tends to inspire a backlash of disgusted intolerance in fact), but rather it looks upon things with what you might call the calm, still eye of God, a kind of perception that transcends both narrow-minded bigotry and the kind of rose colored multiculturalism that simply inverts the equation by damning technology and development while celebrating poverty, illiteracy, and backward social repression, so long as they're not "Western."

I must see this movie while tripping! I think it would be such an unreal experience!

Oh yes, yes indeed. Believe me when I tell you that it will be an unforgettable experience.
