Baraka - The Ultimate Visual Experience
    #1618952 - 06/08/03 06:20 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Hello everyone! I'd like to introduce myself before I actually start to elaborate as to why I created this thread. I've been lurking around these forums for over a month now and I just recently (today) decided to register because I think I have the concept of how everything works around here. Anyhow, I look forward to making friends and learning about every member here as much as I can while learning about myself as well!

Now that I have the introduction out of the way, I'll get to Baraka. The only way I can describe Bakara is as a collection of cultures and societies filmed all throughout the world. If I remember correctly, I believe it states that the filming process took around thirteen months and the crew traveled across six continents to explore every possibility for this film.

I think it's safe to call Bakara a documentary. There's no real dialogue and I'm glad for that. I personally believe that narration of some sort would spoil the movie. It doesn't really matter where it is on the earth or what type of culture is being filmed, but mainly about concentrating on what's right there in front of you. (I have trouble explaining this.)

I can't actually begin to describe how this film (documentary?) has changed my way of thinking over the past day (I saw it last night)! I guess my main reason for creating this thread was to conclude by asking if anyone has any input about this film or what your take on it was. Also, for those of you that haven't seen it:

You must see it as soon as possible!

Well, I'm not trying to solicit their product. I was just trying to provide some pictures from the film to interest others.

I love the scene where the tribe is chanting in those rhythms. One guy will shout something, and then everyone will switch rhythms. It almost seems like theyre yelling random things but theyre locked into each other.
They look like theyre having a really good time.

It made me kinda sad... Seeing a community really sharing a human experience like that, and then comparing it to US. sigh...

Okay, atomik, could you refrain from "advertising" any of your hip/hop artists in the future?

Thank you for bringing this wonderful film to everybody's attention. It comes up a lot both here and in the Music, Art, and Literature forum, but as far as I'm concerned it can never be mentioned too many times because it is so wonderful. In fact, I just watched it again last night. Some people have gone so far as to say "See Baraka and die." I don't know if I would go that far, but I think it certainly belongs on the "Must See Before I Die and Hopefully As Soon As Possible" list of the entire human race.

Fantastic movie for tripping with too, by the way, a real gateway into the Godhead.

Hey there Lazarus. I agree with you, this movie is sweet... Especially to someone who has never been outside a boxed-in, Civilized world such as America... It's such a change of scenery. I remember thinking to myself towards the beginning with the volcano, how if I ever wanted to commit suicide, FUCK jumping off a bridge or building, I'd jump into that thing! I bet it would feel nice and toasty.

I even had my mom watch it...

Oh and it's 15 bucks at Amazon for the DVD... You could probably find it cheaper used as well.  :smirk:

That scene is amazing! I'm sorry if I came off as trying to endorse this film by the way. I thought it was cool how they showed ancient ruins that were abandoned and had been reclaimed by the earth. By this, I mean roots and other plants were growing all throughout them and it seemed as if the earth was reclaiming the locations. Then, it goes further and shows modern abandoned buildings yet to be graced by nature's touch so to speak. It just made me realize that we are yet one more civilization which will end up like all others. We will not last forever.

Also, I love the scene where they're filming in the cigarette factory and poverty somehow manages to fill the air. Then, they show this rich Asian business man smoking a cigarette like it's nothing. The cinematography is so great your eyes immediately jump directly to him as soon as the scene starts.

It makes me sad that I won't be able to take part or be able to view some of these cultures in my lifetime.

EDIT: I almost forgot the time-lapse photography. It makes me think of us as ants. Everyone is always busy and in a hurry to get somewhere and no one has the opportunity to stop and just enjoy life.

and to think, the chicken factory is probably the LIGHT end of the spectrum of what they could have filmed to illustrate whatever it was they specifically had in mind for that scene.

Excellent film.

Another one you should watch out for is Koyaanisqatsi (Life Out of Balance) and its sequel Powaqqatsi (Life in Transformation). They are very similar to Baraka.. I think they may have been made by the same poeple.
