shin splints

Does anyone have experience with shin splints?

Did you try using shock absorbing insoles in your shoes?

I might have to resort to swimming and cycling for a while...

yep, you should switch to another activity

running really isn't necessarily all that great for you, unless you really know what you're doing..

i had them extremely bad last year, i put it down to finally learning how to use my left foot in soccer. i couldnt even walk sometimes, i actually got fired from a job because i kept leaning on things, and that was deemed not good for company image....haha. youve got to stretch, a lot. cycling and swimming like you said will be great. get them stronger again. like, i dont think my left leg muscles around my shin could handle kicking a ball hard over and over, and in my case i think the muscle started tearing from the bone...there are many ways it can happen. but yeah it doesnt bother me now, but sometimes...like about an hour ago, i bent over to pick something up, and i felt a peculiar tingle in my left shin. a year ago, i would have had to hold myself up.

Yeah new shoes will help.

Also try building up the muscles on your calf.  Toe raises before running along with rolling each angle in circles seemed to help when I used to get them a lot.  I don't get them really at all anymore, since I've started building some muscle on my lower leg.

Also try focusing on the way you run...lessen the impact.  Try to think of your legs as springs that absorb the fall of your foot to get them to bend more.

Running is pretty awful on the joints/shins.  If you absolutely have to run, make sure your shoes have good support (read: aren't old), and don't run on pavement.  That shit will ruin you.

I've had arthroscopic surgery on both my knees, and I can't run.  Swimming/cycling/elliptical is what you should be doing.  Fortunately for me, I always hated running with a passion.

Heal up then switch to minimalist shoes or start barefoot. I had tons of issues with my legs Before I started going barefoot. Heel striking is most likely the cause, the impact it creates is terrible for you.

Stretch more. I get them, I pronate when I walk, and keep my toes drawn up. I'll get them just from walking sometimes. Ice helps heal.

I challenge you to challenge yourself more! When you feel complacent and ready to hang it up, challenge yourself to get over it! If you fail, don't look at it as you didn't succeed, look at it as you would a rock face you're trying to climb. Stand back, wayyyy back, and look at it and plot another path. If you can't find one, shuffle down the way a little, a little change of scenery or a view from a different angle may give you the insight you need.
