Shin splints
    #11486304 -

Are impossibly annoying. I've kept off of them for almost two months, only getting exercise on a stationary bike. They still haven't gone away. The weather is perfect for exercising outside, and I can't because I know it will just make the shin splints worse.

I haven't been able to run for prolonged periods since high school because of shin splints and Osgood-Schlatters, which start affecting me at 14 and haven't gone away 10 years later.  I'm lucky that I can normally bicycle ride with no problems though.  get off the stationary bike and get on a real one

I ran a lot one day, and it hurt so badly that I got my knee x-rayed.  Osgood schlatters, but it went away in about I week. I think that I'll be able to exercise outdoors if I gradually increase my training when the shin splints go away. In a few weeks I'll train once outside in that week, then one more time every week until I can do it 5 days a week. This a new problem for me, hopefully one that doesn't nag me for too long.

Anyone have any tips? I've been using a orthotic in the affected leg. I had shin splints in both legs, but one leg has fully healed.

Give your legs a rest (a long rest). Next time it happens tie ice bags to your shins, start doing longer warm ups before exercises (maybe use some heat packs as well), and try to do some leg stretches when youre not exercising and a little after warm ups.
From what I know there are no permanent fixes for shin splints, best you can do is long rests to let them heal and stretches to loosen the muscles.

Btw, do you have flat feet?

I've pretty much avoided all strenuous impact on my legs for the past two months, but I can't stay off of them completely. They're healing slowly, so I'm just going to continue what I'm doing. No hard impact, lots of stationary bike work. I'd been taking a lot of ibuprofen, and that made my shins feel pretty much 100%. It wasn't healthy though and I stopped taking it.

Its not always just impact that causes shin splints, its many times, from what Ive heard, overuse or over tightening of the calf muscles. The shin splints from repetitive impact are hair line fractures on the bone, which might indicate a need for calcium supplements and will heal at the same speed as all broken bones (I forget how long it takes for broken bones to heal...). But its more likely tight muscles...

All I know is that they're the most annoying injury that I've ever had. I'm really starting to get back into shape, and I can't wait to start training outside. It's just so much more enjoyable.

So when I can train outside without re-aggravating my shins splints I'm going to get right into it and start with HIIT. After I get my BF down to 14-15%, I'm going to start weight training for about three months, mostly basic mass building stuff like squats, bench, dead-lifts. Then I'm going to cut back down.

Jesus Christ Monkey Balls. These things will not go away. I might have to get them x-rayed.

Ahh, the ol' medial tibial stress syndrome hehe.  The key to correcting this problem is stretch stretch STRETCH!  The problem is that you actually don't have the appropriate amount of range of motion for proper running.  This sounds weird, and I know, but most people actually don't have proper range of motion in their feet and ankles.  I'm going to guess that your "foot up" (dorsiflexion) motion is a little tight and that is causing the muscles on the front of your leg to recieve excess stress, and thus it becomes inflammed and painful.  SO, I would recommend using stairs or step like a few books to stretch your foot both up and down.  Use ice, compression, and anti-inflammatories after workout.

On a side note, you should seek medical attention if your shins start to ache a lot, especially at night when you're laying in bed.  This is a red flag for stress fractures.

To add..

With you're Osgood-Schlatter's disease, you should try looking in to fluk or cho-pat braces.  They're very effective "home remedy" fixes.  On top of that, ice, rest, and anti-inflammatories as needed.
