    #4772292 -

Hi

does anyone know the proper treatment of shin-splints?
mine are hurting pretty bad, they go away sometimes but always come back hurting like a bitch whenever i put pressure on them
ive heard its good to use ice and heat, as well as get special soles for your feet

also does anyone know of a good physical fitness message board where I could get these questions answered?

thanks!

Really creepy thought here, but you night want to try a military message board.... I hear, given a long enough timeline in the army or marines, you're all but guaranteed shin splints

What, exactly, are shin splints?

dr_gonz, did that help?

euphoria: i believe they are tendins in your lower leg that have ripped due to too much impact, causing an irritating amount of pain when you put any pressure on them

When I used to run, I would get shin splints if I ran everyday. One thing I tried that worked really well to speed the recovery was to swab some DMSO on the area as soon as I noticed the pain (after getting home from a run of course). If you do try DMSO, before applying make sure you clean the area thoroughly with a cleanser that does not have any perfumes or does not leave a residue (I used rubbing alcohol). Also, make sure you use cotton (I used cotton balls) and not some synthetic material to apply the DMSO. DMSO will act to help transport some chemicals through your skin - that's the reason for the warnings about cleaning and not using synthetic materials.
