Shin Split?
    #17056496 -

I've been a fair weather runner for the past couple years, although have been slacking over the last 1 year. I was running occasionally over the summer but shorter distances 2 or 3x a week (5k or so.)

Out of the blue, i did a 12km and was doing that every weekend for a month, and then a 16km and an 18km with extended up and downhill.... (this was 2 weeks ago.)

Now, i have a pain in my right shin. At first i thought i bumped it at work, but after realizing that the pain was fading away after a few days and then resumed when i became active again..

Basically, i went too far too fast + i think the hills hurt me.

At present it is quite swollen to the touch and sensitive. It irritates me when i am going from kneeling to standing at work, and also when driving. The last activity i did was a low impact, slow hike on the weekend and i've been taking it easy since... (although i stand/drive most of the day at work.)

Does this sound like a shin splint? Bruised bone?

How long until i can get back to it ... i am getting restless.

I'd switch to bicycling for awhile.  Stretch a lot each day.  Ice it a lot to take down swelling, which will help it heal.  I wish I could tell you how long it'll take to get better.

I had terrible shin splints in boot camp. I mean TERRIBLE. It took me the entire two months of bootcamp for my body to begin to get over them. I mean, they would tell us to run and I would have to start extremely slow and lurch all over the place to get myself to even move. The worst part came when I already had shin splints and then they made us run in our steel toe work boots. It was like someone hitting me in the shin with a steel pipe with every step. Hell, I had them so bad that the pain traveled all the way up my leg.

I am under the impression that they are tiny fractures in your bones from repetitive pounding on the ground. Like any fracture they simply require rest time to heal. I have heard, and have gathered from experience, that you can run through them. I did several times in my life. In boot camp mine eventually went away around the last week.

I mean, you can run through them, and some people do. It just depends on how much pain you are willing to tolerate for a period of time. Otherwise you should run, get your splints, rest, run more, and repeat.

Really though you may want to take the safe road and ensure you are rested up before you run long distance, you know? Better safe than sorry.

Swimming seems to be a suitable replacement for running, it's actually preferred by me in this cool wet weather.

I can barely notice the shin splint now in day to day life, but i am sure it would come back if i was running.

I think they may have been exacerbated by not properly stretching before hand.

I also love to swim. Did you used to swim competitively?

I used to swim the 100 breast very well.

Since I got back from the Navy I have been hitting the pool. I admit I am really out of shape, but I am making steady progress.

What kind of swiming do you do?

I never swam competitively, but went through all the lessons upto to but stopped before lifeguards, when i was really young too. Basically, i swam alot as a kid.

Been out of it for probably close to 15 years though - i am weak in the pool. Need to look at some good routines and do some form checks - right now i just swim 500m front stroke and i've only been about 4x over the past week and a half. (just bought a 4 month pass.)
