Alright...so I'm going to give you the straight dope, from a dope junkie. I've been clean for about a year and have no intention on going back, fyi.
Yes, there are some people who develop craving for heroin right after the 1st time they tried it. This has not been my experience, however.
I always experimented with drugs, mainly psychedelics. I smoked weed everyday, drank occasionally, but my main squeeze was just smoking pot and rolling or doing psychs during a concert or festival. I was doing this for a few years...sampling various drugs. I remember liking the percocet that the doc gave me for my wisdom teeth but when they were gone I could take it or leave it. Did roxi's and oxy seldomly, whenever a buddy had some and we weren't doing shit, but nothing habit forming.
One day I decided to hit up a buddy who I'd gotten roxi from before. My girl and I were bored as fuck and wanted a little something beyond our usual potfest. He only had heroin, so I figured "why not?" I copped two points (200 mgs) called up one of my buddies to come over and try it with us and we did it. It feels good...we all had a good chill night, definitely no twinge of addiction. We were all actually telling each other how it's not that big of a deal and how we didn't think we'd do it again.
Well...a couple of months goes by and me and my girl decide to cop some again, just to mix it up a little like before. Same result as before. Fast forward a few more months and it's summertime. I'm not taking any classes and have minimal hours at my job. I'm just chilling, smoking, dealing, and doing whatever the fuck I want. I decide to get some more dope. This time I don't tell my girl, just keep it for myself. I nurse a couple points for a few weeks, doing a little bit at a time, putting it away right after, perfectly content with the warm blanket feeling that seemed to make my afternoons a little better.
Only two weeks after I finish that last bit up I decide to get some more. I'm thinking "I'm not an addict, I was able to hold some dope for a pretty long period of time and moderate things." Well that didn't work this time, I did it all in one night. Back again the next day. I had the money and the time to just do heroin all day every day and that developed into my addiction. I'm not going to go into specifics because I think we can all agree that heroin addiction is no place they want to be.
If I didn't have all that time on my hands I might not have kept using dope, but I couldn't see the future the first time I tried it. I didn't know I was setting up a series of irrational decisions just by 'harmlessly' trying it that first night...taking it out of the "danger drug" category and placing it into "not that big of a deal". The shit creeps up on you...at least it did for me. And while it's very possible you'll be fine after you try it...for months, maybe even a year. If you come across it again, you might do it again and that time could be the time that tips you over into a lot of pain, misery and suffering.
By the way, once you're addicted to a substance, you can't use again. Not just your drug of choice, you can't use ANYTHING ever again...or you're either going to go back to your drug of choice or substitute your addiction. You can't drink, you can't smoke weed...it'll all lead back to the same place. Are you really prepared to give up all drugs/alcohol for the risk of getting addicted to one?
Quote: Bottom line, whether you believe in self control over addiction or not.. YOU ARE NOT MISSING OUT ON ANYTHING! you will not gain a single thing from trying opiates other than temporary pleasure
