Agar Recipes: Aloha's R7

Hey, i was reading about cordyceps when i came across the R7 agar recipe.  It states on the page

"The agar used for this hybridization is an Aloha Medicinals Inc. proprietary agar named R7 Agar, consisting of malt extract, activated carbon, minerals and humus – the carbon-rich ash residue from a coal burning industrial process. For the exact recipe see table 4. Other agars could probably be used as well. This just happens to be our production agar that we use everyday, and once we found that it also worked with the snake venom for hybridization, we found no reason to experiment with any other agar."

So the recipe contains humus, Epsom salts, and KOH.  Does anyone have experience with any of these ingredients?  I would like to try adding them to my own custom recipe.  If this is aloha's production agar, i would think these ingredients are worth experimenting with.

Anyone? 

I have been using activated charcoal in my agar for sometime, and i love it. SO i have experience with that one. Ive been using medical grade NORIT A SUPRA from http://www.buyactivatedcharcoal.com/product/activated_charcoal_powder/norit/a_supra. ; I switch back and forth between PDA and MEA adding yeast, sawdust, and other stuff into my weekly agar batches. I may just have to try a test batch of agar with these new ingredients.

Cool, I would try this formula if it is proven to be more effective than just MEA.

I'm sure John uses it for specialty applications, but it's not what Aloha uses in culture slants for example.  He's also really good at helping out those who ask politely, so you might want to ask him the benefits of the formula.

I've added carbon to agar in an attempt to germinate old spores with moderate success, but don't use it as a matter of course.

just what i was thinking RR. i dont think aleon is trying to suggest the aloha R7 recipe is better then others. it is just a specialty blend that is used in special situations. im going to give this a try soon also. the second link you posted doesn't work unless you remove the last period. thanks for the info

also i wonder if you can take some activated carbon they sell if fish stores and grind it up into a fine powder to use in agar

could you use activated carbon in a liquid culture i have been experimenting with colloidal silver in mycology because it wont harm mycelium but it kills spores its pretty cool stuff

activated carbon: in plant tissue cultivation - they are adsorption toxic compounds what restrict plant tissue grows up
I think this situation is too. both of liquid media, hard media activated carbon keep out of harms way

I spent the month of March at Aloha in their Advanced Spawn-Making Scholarship Program.  During the month, we spent many hours in the Lab preparing petri dishes for CS and inoculating grain spawn jars for production.  We also spent time preparing the growing medium bags and inoculating them after autoclaving.

I have read the above referenced article and others as well as sitting through quite a few hours with John Holliday as he held regular education lectures for the entire scholarship team.  The methods and procedures described in the article were used to produce the hybrid strain of CS, but are not used in normal production. 

John's team varies the agar substrate constantly when growing CS on petri dishes to challenge and strengthen the mycelium.  We were even given the opportunity to create original agar formulas that we poured in the Lab.

The best advise I can give is to experiment and constantly change your agar formulas for the sake of maintaining mycelial vigor.  Activated carbon was present in the lab in a very small number of petri dishes, but those were experimental in nature and not a part of any regular production.
