Kuehneromyces mutabilis on cardboard agar
    #3065782 - 08/29/04 06:10 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Kuehneromyces mutabilis is a close relative of Pholiota nameko which grows on dead broadleaf trees and is a very good edible.

Since I got a spore print of Kuehneromyces mutabilis from speeker ( thanks again  )  I decided to put the mycelium on cardboard agar.

The recipe for the cardboard agar was inspired by the ATWAR's cardboard cloning tek on shroomery and this thread on mycotopa.

Here is what I did:

I peeled of the first layer of the corrugated cardboard and soaked it in the following solution:

- 500 ml h20
- 20  g dextrose
- 1  g yeast
- tiny bit of soy sauce

After soaking it was put into a glass petri dish and covered a bit with that solution and then closed again.
Then it was heated in the microwave oven till the cardboard was moist but not wet anymore.
After that a bit of mycelium of K. mutabilis was transfered onto the cardboard agar in the glovebox.
I think it is important that the agar has a good contact with the surface of the cardboard, so that it can take hold easily.

Here is a pic from the top side:

And here is one from the back side:

I also got a tiny piece of wood where the mycelium of K. mutabilis was growing on and put it on some wet cardboard.
But this time I did have not added any nutrients to the cardboard.
The mycelium took over to the cardboard but it is growing much slower and is only recognizable by the change in color.
You can see that K. mutabilis is a white rot fungus :

And here you can see how the mycelium of K.mutabilis looks on normal agar:

Update: Now the mycelium has grown out the cardboard and looks like that:

Thanks
The culture has already grown out the cardboard and I have put it in the fridge ...
