Mind Reading Technology - Who would you show your mind to?

An area of modern research that everybody is interested in: detecting patterns of thought in a person by scanning the brain.

On the relatively harmless scale is when a piece of technology gets you to perform some basic mental tasks for it to be able to learn how to read your motor-type signals. Then you can use it to control videogames or robots, like the monkey that could use a robotic arm to grab a piece of fruit. these signals are fairly simple apparently and can be detected through electrical fields around the skull.

On the more intense thought-police scale is where a piece of technology requires you to think about certain things, images, words, etc. Then when your brain is scanned again, a computer can determine whether you have thought any of the thoughts that you previously programmed into it.

Now, many people react slightly unnerved about this, because it could be used to prevent freedom of thought.

But all this is prevented if you just dont let them learn about your brain, or dont go along with the process correctly.

However it might not be so easy in the future.

Think about how disadvantaged you are today if you dont have an email, or a car or a mobile. Well you might not be that disadvantaged but people clearly feel a social pull towards having these things.

When the technology improves, the thought reading software could be used to control all kinds of things like the appliances in your house, lights, computer, etc. Id imagine a whole host of entertainment systems would be developed which utilised this mind reading capability to control virtual worlds. A dream-show could be made by detecting if you are thinking about certain themes, and progressing a plot line in that direction.

Shifty corporations could load the training phase of the technology (when it detects your mind as you think about certain things) with emotional or market-related thoughts in order to customise advertisements.

Basically it might be hard to say NO to awesome future technologies, and as they become cheaper and more widespread, everyone starts using them, so people who DIDNT open themselves to mindreading end up being ostracised from those who do.

billions of people are mind controlled through TV every day...

sounds like this new technology you're describing would dig deeper into the head... personally i wouldn't want anything to do with it if it were being implemented by corporations... just sayin'
