Expectations or Clear Mind?

I was just wondering what you guy's thought about this: For first time shroomers... What are the advantages of reading a ton of trip reports and such before shroomin. As opposed to...Shroomin without any expectations about what you are about to experience.
When I first shroomed I had heard from some friends accounts of their experiences but that was it. I guess one advantage of reading a bunch first is you know what to expect.
However, this can also be a disadvantage your expectations can cloud the actual experience. If you are allways thinking during the trip..."Well in Gary's trip report at The Shroomery he said he felt at one with the universe and saw little elves in the bushes....How come I don't see any of that stuff?" If you are thinking this you can't have your own trip.
Any opinions?

Personally, I think that nothing you can read in a trip report can prepare you for the actual mushroom experience that it doesn't matter. When I first shroomed I read a lot of trip reports first and I thought I'd know what to expect, but when it came on it was on a completely other level than what I had invisioned.
That said, I think an ideal situation is to not read any reports, but to have an experienced tripper nearby to assure you if need be that what you are feeling is completely normal. I didn't have access to an experienced sitter so I read reports instead, but I doubt it really helped me or altered the experience much.

yup one should let their own personality color the trip, not someone else's

I didn't read any trip reports until after a few intensely spiritual mushroom voyages... Also, I can count the times I have been to church on my hands, so I don't think that would have much to do with it. What's left? Television? BAaahahah...

If you've never tripped, trip reports seem like a fantastic story that's very interesting to read, but if someone thinks they know the ins and outs of a trip before they've actually done it, they're going to be sorry. You can get a general idea of what you *might* experience, but nothing compares to the real deal. I read plenty of trip reports before taking mushrooms and tons before doing Salvia. It was good in that I learned how to stay safe. Like going out into public all fucked up is generally not a good idea, the importance of set and setting, and to set the bowl down after you take your hits so you don't burn yourself or start a fire when the Salvia takes hold....things like that. It did kind of leave me with a lot of pre-concieved notions of the "trip" but I mostly forgot about it once I actually started tripping, and when it was over, I was looking forward to writing a report. Writing trip reports helped me sort out alot of what happened on my trips. They're a major pillar of this online community and others like it!

I wish that the first time I ever tripped on anything (lsd for me) that I had been slipped it unknowingly. Then I would have no preconcieved notions of what was happening to my mind and body. Thus it would have been a pure (or more pure anyway) experience. But alas, it was colored by the false info force-fed me by school and commercials and the biased opinion of those who gave the drug to me. It might have freaked me out (insanity and such) or maybe, just maybe, it would have been the DOORS OF PERCEPTION opening for me. But I'll never know.

I'd say a "primed" mind.
I had a pretty-clear mind my first time. I just didn't care what happened. (yeah, I know... I was a jackass... but that was a different Sclorch). It blew me away... and I was literally transformed. But I think I was lucky- I was not "primed" myself.
I have personally "primed" people for their first time. I try to make sure they know exactly how the drug works (to the best of science's knowledge). I tell them to not expect anything. And, lastly, I feel them out... that's the hard, subjective part (with each person it's been different). I pretty much have it down pat. Not one person (whom was turned on by me) has had a bad time or freaked out (seriously freaked out... a little is fine- MY subjective definitions). The count (thus far): at least a dozen.

Definitely see what you are saying. I guess I like to play it safe. Although no one that I have introduced to shroom world has had a bad trip, I know a few people who have had bad first trips. Some people are going to be more susceptible to really freaking out when their pardigm for apprehending reality is suddenly not applicable. I recommend the "tripping FAQ" (or whatever it is called) on this site to all who I initiate. I especially like the little tips and tricks for avoiding a bad trip. I think having a positive time during your first trip is especially important.
