Re: Richard Dawkins Children's book is out [Re: shivas.wisdom]

You've gotta be joking...

Monkey didn't evolve into humans.

A common primate ancestor evolved into both of us, as well as the neanderthals, and several other humanoid species that died out.

You took that quote right out of a standup routine.  You really can't be serious.

When a population gets split up, the two groups evolve their separate ways.  Mutations don't happen the same way, and even the same mutations aren't always beneficial in different environments.

Say a population is separated onto a different piece of land due to a flood.  They're now on a piece of land surrounded by water.  If this land stays this way millions of years, the species on this piece of land will evolve much differently to the same species on the mainland.  The island species will probably become more adept at catching fish, and develop traits that make aquatic survival easier, while the other shouldn't evolve much.  Unless of course something happens to change the environment of the mainland species as well.  Then they'll start evolving to fit the new environment too.

You now have two different species that came from the same ancestor species.

On the 5th page of a Richard Dawkins thread you are discussing evolution...  This sickens me.  Richard Dawkins (I would think) believes that there is a increasing lack of evidence that god exists.  Maybe people don't understand atheism.  Any rational person is an atheist (Be careful its a trap).

Do you believe in pasiden, Fenrir, Jupiter, etc etc exists?  If no, then you too are an atheist.  I just take it one god further .

The thing is, even aside from the common ancestor bit, it's not impossible for a species to coexist with its ancestor for an extended period of time.  Homo heidelbergensis, the direct ancestor of both Neanderthals and modern humans, coexisted with its direct ancestor, homo erectus, for about half a million years.

Yes, I agree.

I never said that monkeys evolved into humans. I said it makes no sense for humans to have evolved from monkeys--which, as you admit, is true, because we evolved from a primitive evolutionary ancestor common to both us and monkeys.

No, any rational person can work out what they believe is most likely based on examination and careful reflection upon the evidence, including both exterior evidence available to the public and interior evidence from life experiences.  There is no rational position.  Only rational methodology.

No, you specifically said you disproved his post explaining that we came from a common ancestor.  Go read the context of your post and the two before it one more time.

You still didn't "disprove" anything.  As has been said, common ancestors often lived with the new species that evolved from them.

If one set evolves because of separation, and the other group does not, because it's in the same environment, a species can easily live with its ancestor species when the geographic barriers no longer separate them.

His post makes no mention of 'common ancestor', he's talking about monkeys! I cleverly point out the error in that phrase and suddnely I'm under attack by every athiest on this site.

Your post is the one that mentions common ancestor. You twisted?

This is the post he was talking about:

mellowparty said:
We evolved from "monkeys" that gave rise to us and to primates. Our ancestors just happened to look like monkeys the same way that ancient bacteria resemble contemporary bacteria.

You said you had disproven it.  He doesn't use the word "common ancestor", but that's what he's referring to.

Funny, looks like he's referring to monkeys to me. You can't just say he means another word. That brings all of language into question. How do I know that you aren't using a word, but referring to something completely different? No, that's too much to except--and you are insane for merely mentioning it.

Let me narrow it down for you.

Our ancestors

He doesn't know the name of the common ancestor, but since they resembled monkey, he's calling them that for now, but with quotation marks.  The quotation marks are there for a reason.

Quote:
gave rise to us and to primates

We are us, and the common day monkeys are the "primates."  Evolved from an ancestor.

It's all there.

It's not out of context, because the context is still in tact in the post just before it.  Go back and look if you've already forgotten.  I was just pointing out the parts that you seemed to have missed in the full context.
