Basically to be classified as pop it just has to sound catchy. Catchy tunes are going to be the most popular among people, most people don't listen to lyrics at all.

Because the majority of the population doesn't want to have to actually listen to the music, believe it or not there's a certain skill level needed to listen to music. The more complex the more attention it requires. I'm currently into guys like ewan dobson, marc rizzo, infected mushroom and guys like that who like to play fast change beats alot and have many different parts going on at once. Simple music bores the shit out of me, but everyone that hears me listening to it gets annoyed.

this. also, simplicity. most people naturally only like to listen to what they are familiar with, aka simple music.

but then also whether or not the artist has sex appeal, amongst other factors such as explicit/controversial lyrics, catchiness like he said...etc
