Unlimited energy #2
    #14570760 - 06/06/11 06:22 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

So apparently this may be feasible soon, read; http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14569323.

The question I want to ask is; what effect would having unlimited energy have on society, infrastructure, politics and the rich poor divide across the world and anything else you can think of. In the spirit of being hypothetical I want to discount the idea from the OC's thread that we might run out of 100 billion (or whatever it was) times more energy than we need as that's another question. It's a complex subject with wide ranging implications and we're probably not gonna get many answers on it. But I'm still interested to see what y'all can come up with.

Post away.

Since no one else seems to feel up to any speculation I'll try to get the ball rolling a little, this may fail. Perhaps it's too ambiguous for serious discussion, too distant to bother considering and therefore just not an interesting topic but I started the thread so I don't wanna cop out on it.

Firstly there's no guarantee that this energy would be cheap seeing as it seems to involve a very complicated technological process. So it could actually increase the rich poor divide meaning that the countries without access would continue to be poverty stricken, while the richer countries flourished and starting living the high life, breeding like mad and overpopulation would become a huge problem. You could also see the opposite happening; rich countries would have more relaxed time of things and it would give rise to developing healthier relationships with less boundaries between people who don't know each other leading to a more "liberal" (a shit term but it'll suffice) policies and higher levels of freedom for the general populace. Meaning people didn't feel the need to pass down their personal shit on to multiple offspring in the hopes of gaining immortality.

If that was the case I'm guessing eventually it would spill over into other nations and we'd be able to give more charity aid meaning offspring wasn't a survival neccessity in those countries. This would mean the eventual slowing in population rise and increase in self sufficiency would give them a chance to enjoy the same kind of freedoms the richer countries were enjoying. In this scenario it could truly lead to the change that hippys and LSD never managed to deliver. Pretty cool I think, in that maybe there is some hope now for humanity after all. If science acheived this stunning feat then perhaps the awe and gratitude felt by the general populace would bring a serious move away from religious dogmatism which in the same stroke would remove any need for atheistic dogamatism and we could finally start to get a long a little and stop blowing each other up.

Following on from that people wouldn't need to slave away for rich bosses any more, meaning they would lose power and respect, lobbying would be phased out and laws (hemp comes to mind) would become much less based on their sway. Transport and food would be cheap and easy. People would have more time to jazz up their cities and paint them crazy colours. Art would be everywhere, erecting huge film screens showing mezmerizing psychedelic triptastic wonderlands. Music and poetry would resound through the streets. People would burst into spontaneous dances in cotton candy whirling dervish costumes. The subtle jesters and crazy kings of a multi-hued court filled with lyre and maiden song would blow the hinges out their caged compartments and their songs and aromas would soar through the sky floating over the cool kingdoms of babylon where organic feasts of spiced meats, salt crusted cods, unlimited arrays of herbaceous and odd alien floral vegetable would lie laden across fantasian curbs swiftly ladeled to every passer by....

....And so paradise would reign and death would have no dominion in the everlasting triumphs of hope and joy and bugle blows...

He woke up realizing it was all a dream....

THE END.

So, uh.... I might have got a bit carried away toward the end , if anyone wants to have a go at a darker fantasy be my guest.

Darker, but more likely?

The government insider would say that ever if it were free to produce, it can't be cheap to use. Maybe a little bit for each can be cheap, but power meters won't be going anywhere. It would be the ultimate prize, especially if it were portable, and governments would risk their entire military arm to get it if they thought they had a chance. If it were secured by one nation, they would become the defacto center of the universe until insiders leaked the production method out to other countries. At this point, who knows what would happen. It would be my guess that either way a one world government would be more likely than in the current scenario, and I lean towards worst case scenarios for when that happens. After all, unlimited power wouldn't change human nature. Quite the opposite according to some. "Unlimited power corrupts unlimitedly."

Well that sounds kinda amusing too... I'm up for anything that'll mix things up a bit. You can always harakiri if it gets too bad. :suicide: :vaped:

Hey, I can be positive too. What would happen if the method was distributed in a peer to peer network, and went viral? Instead of capitalizing on the discovery, the source would benevolently give it away for free, and people started building these machines? Could the governments stop something like that if it spread quickly enough?

Once it became clear that there were too many for the government to control, popular uprisings were backed by many in power and there was a peaceful transition to a more benevolent, more democratic government that empowered every individual on the planet. The removal of the -reality of scarcity- was all it took to calm the collective mind enough to promote reasonable behaviour, drop religious superstitions, and learn to be all neighborly and stuff.

All worked well until one day, the mad genius used the unlimited energy to blow the planet up.
