White, soft, stipes okay?
    #1452843 - 04/12/03 03:16 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

Hi. My buddy Fred has 8 brf/v/water cakes in a big ass clear Martha Stewart brand growing chamber humidified by perlite. Because Fred was unsure if colonization was complete because vermiculate was still visible all over the top of the cakes, Fred birthed one in advance of the others as a testor. The mycelium got really puffy looking, and it appeared to gain a small amount of greenish mold on an edge of the cake. Anyway, right now, the one we put early is sprouting about 8 B+ shrooms. The largest one is to about 2 inches now. They look wide at the base, and the wide are is very thick and white compared to the rest of the stipe, which is kind of a golden color. I was wondering if that's normal and if these are safe mushrooms. Thanks for any feedback.

Put a touch of baking soda on that green spot.

Thanks, will try, but seriously.... is it normal for the bases of the sprouting shrooms to be very thick, white, and soft?

BUMP! I really am concerned about this whiteness softness stuff... hopefully the shrooms will grow out of it, but in the mean time I'm looking for any and all educated opinions. Thanks

Is the white stuff growing at the base of the stem? It is probably just mycelia growing there because humidity is too high. It should be safe.

Or so this says.

I think this is exactly what is happening. It is growing at the base of the stem, and I never thought of it as mycelia... I thought it was some strange condition of the shroom. My humidity is around 85%... that's not too high is it? Anyway, thank you very much Oddish.... you the man! I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy!

That's normal. It's usually caused by an abundance of moisture. Are your cakes sitting directly on the damp perlite?

My friend would be more concerned about the green.

Totally normal, sign of healthy shrooms if you ask me.

The mold seemed to be only on the surface, and it just totally stopped spreading. It must be moisture, because they are sitting directly on perlite and sometimes I've seen droplets of water sitting on the tops of the cakes. Hopefully the mold isn't doing any harm, because the shrooms are growing rapidly... this is my first time and I'm so excited! Thanks for the help!
