Cat Litter(Bentonite) as a Vermiculate Substitution
    #4282651 - 06/11/05 08:52 AM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Hi folks,
Has anyone try Cat Litter(Bentonite) as a vermiculate substitution. As I read somewhere it can hold water even more than vermiculate. But when it mixed with water it become a glue like material not as vermiculate is porous.
It is hard to find Vermiculate in my area so I want to ask if anyone has experiences with this rock.I think it can also be used as perlite or geolite for maintaning rh.But I want to used in my jars not as a vermiculate substitution but sth like that.As I am using grains maybe additive to grain to make more comfortable for mycelium.
Peace

Thus not suitable.

Yeah but it doesn't need to be porous for grains. It is needed when mixing it with brf.
So I decided to experiment.I made 2 grains one is only in the base of the jar there is wet cat litter, another one is mixed with cat litter all around. And a the control jar has no additive. The grain is rye and I will inoculate with the same liquid culture. They are in the PC actually.
I will post results here.

www.themadseason.com has vermiculite pretty cheap. I have trouble trying to get it in my area too. I ordered some from here and it came fast. Hope this helps.

Cat litter isnt going to work, itll just clump up.

>Yeah but it doesn't need to be porous for grains.

Incorrect. Any substrate should be porous and fluffy.

I work in the fuel industry and I do know of a litter-type of material called Durasorb. It is an inert, porous type of litter that seems a lot like perlite to me, only it is harder, heavier and more compressed. I have used it to clean up fuel/oil/water spills with and noticed no clumping. I have never tried to use it as a verm substitute, but it may be worth a try. As far as buying it, I have to find out where my employer gets it from. I know it is fairly cheap though. I tried searching for it on the www and all I find is a medical type of absorbent that also goes by the name Durasorb. I will snag some from my job and see how it works. I'll post the results.

Ive read about using automotive clean up materials but seem to remember that they usually have some kind of chemical in them that is horrible for fungus, therefore making it not suitable for a substrate or to use as perlite or geolite. Sorry i cant remember more details.
