The Infinite Vastness of the Universe
    #1442542 - 04/09/03 10:20 AM (20 years, 11 months ago)

Has anyone ever stopped and thought about this? It's such a trip to think about how tiny we are in big scheme of things. Think about how far it is from one end of the Earth to the other. Then think about the distance to the Sun. Then think about the distance to the second nearest star, Alpha Centaury. Then think about how far away the dimmest stars in the night sky are, and how some of them don't even exist anymore, but you can still see them cuz their light is still travelling here. Then think about all the stars we'll never reach, and never even see, even with the Hubble telescope. Think about all the planets in the universe that might have life on them. Now imagine what lies beyond the universe. What if our universe is just a subatomic particle in a much bigger universe made up of universes? Now imagine that that universe is also a subatomic particle in another universe, etc. ad infinitum. I don't think the human mind can fully grasp the concept of infinity.

yea it's fuckin big I guess. Kinda pointless how big it is. I wonder if you could genetically engineer a platypus to be as big as a car.

In the same respect, do you think it regresses infinitely smaller and smaller?
The universe like a fractal design spiraling infinitely in infinite sizes, shapes, modes and on and on, and we're situated somewhere on that 'plane' for lack of a better word.

I agree. Maybe that's what makes fractals such a trip--they are a representation of the infinity that is our universe.

I think what's even more of a trip is that we still have an impact, albeit small, on this vast infinitude. The sun is as much dependent on us to shine as it is dependent on the Earth to shine; we are as dependent on the sun shining as we are on having food in our stomachs. As humans, we are a part (albeit small, but isn't everything a small part when put into some scale) of a vast interconnected universe, which is alive and everchanging all around us.

Everything is of one substance, just in different modes. At one time your body was star dust.

All the cells in your body are completely different ones than were in your body 10 years ago.

Yeah, I agree. Although we try to graps the idea of infinity, it really impossible for a human mind to truely visualize becuase our lives are cluttered with boundaries. It's a little irritating just to think that one could never reach the far reaches of space because there really is no far reaches of space... no matter where you go, you'll always just be in the middle. But there really is no middle becuase there is no end, nor a beginning.

I was tripping on mushrooms and syrian rue one night with my best friend, and we came up with an interesting "thing." I'm writing a trip report about this, and I can link you to it when it's done and posted, but for now I'll just tell you about the relevant part:

Ok here's what we noticed, it's kind of an interesting metaphor built into the universe. You know how when you hold two mirrors up to eachother they reflect eachother infinitly? You know how you can stick your head in between and look into one mirror and it's like you can ALMOST see down a hallway forever, but then the farther down the hallway you try to look the more your head gets in the way?

You try to look into infinity but your head gets in the way. Woah, trippy

cool eh?

The next thing I realized is that we did that experiment with the two mirrors in school in grade 3. It was such an excellent metaphor. Come on kids, PUT YOUR HEAD IN THE WAY! Yeah, keep trying, we know you'll never actually see infinity with this excercise, but I'm afraid we can't delineate our thinking at all. Oh, here's a brick wall, bang your head against it until all you know how to do is cut cheese at Mcdonalds! Other ways of thinking? Non-existant! Finally after thousands of years of civilization and scientific progress, WE KNOW EveRYTHING!

If the universe is infinite, then you can subtract any number of things from it other than infinity and it will still be infinite. It is hard for me to even begin to conceptualize what infinity means. It doesn't seem like it is possible, but then again, it's hard understand the big picture from only one perspective.

I do not know how big the universe is, and I don't pretend to. There is only one thing I've learned, however... standing with your arms outstretched doesn't come very close to signifing how large the universe is.

i think anyone whos ever smoked pot has thought about it.

Let alone someone who ate shrooms. I was thinking about this when I was 9.
