Is life inherently meaningful?
    #13827179 -

So my question is this: Does life contain an inherent meaning of its own or does everything create its own meaning of life? Would like to hear opinions and why.

All subjective as far as our brains can tell.

No there is no meaning to life. From all the information at our disposal you can conclude that we are nothing more than matter being manipulated by the impersonal forces of the universe.

I guess I can see where each of you have your points. In my opinion I most agree with iThink. But I think also that we have some impetus in pushing back on the universe as well rather than being puppets that have no control of what happens at all.

I understand why you take that view. I assume you believe in free will.

Realize that we are still systems made up of matter, our formations are just more "complex". As with all other systems, it is possible to describe us through math. It's ability to be described by math shows certainty in what will happen. The only uncertainty thrown in is quantum fluctuations, however these are not something we can control and all they do is add probabilities to the description of ourselves through math.

So basically we are puppets, it's just that some puppets are smarter than others.

Well I think that we take opposite views on the importance of free will. I would say each thing is its own variable. The outside forces around us shape our response but they in no way force us to make such a response.

In the model you present we are puppets of chance. The only things that could change oru path is a quantum fluctuation which itself can be described and quantified. So do you believe in predetermined destiny?

Life (existence) holds the potential for meaning. It is subjective, but it's still meaning. It seems there is reason for everything, and all endeavors hold potential of some kind. Everyone creates their own meaning, but that could also be taken to say life (which we are part of), is what is creating the meaning. I don't think we are as autonomous as the mind is generally prone to assume. Everything is an effect of causation. So meaning is embedded in the perceptions of understanding how reality works. Another way of looking at it, is that meaning is what something means, what the reason for a thing is, meaning, what causes what.

why there is reality and patterned, law-like consistency at all, rather than noise or non-reality is not a question physics answers. It's a question physics presupposes an answer to in order to provide other answers.

No, I don't believe in predetermination because quantum fluctuations exist. But please tell me where free will would come from.

There is no objective meaning to life as far as I can tell.

It's one thing to simply enjoy a style of life that one enjoys, but it's another thing altogether to refer to another person's choice as "wrong" or to rationalize their behavior as being pathological or resulting from some sort of inadequacy or failing so as to create a sense of superiority or separation as yet another projection of a personal fear or control issue.

Yes, even a perceived "lack of meaning" is meaning, in the mind. In this regard, there are no negatives, only positives.

Life has to be meaningful to some degree, otherwise we wouldn't exist. No particle can exist without meaning. My understanding at this point is that everything else exists because my conscious perceives it to. If I'm not here, nothing exists anymore. The reason I am here, is because something allowed me to be. Who knows what that something is. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that it was a living God all along. I would be considerably shocked if it were actually natural random circumstances. Matter, life, from nothing? A great big empty universe for matter to spread into from nothing? Cmon man...

I vote inherently meaningful, always.

:handth:

Asking if life is "inherently" meaningful doesn't make much sense to me.  It is obvious that meaning exists, even if it is all subjective.  There is no contradiction if this meaning isn't primary in the world, because the parts of our universe that are meaningless (ie, everything in our universe besides our subjective creations of meaning) don't matter.  How can something be of any importance if there is no meaning to it? Literally the only thing of any concern is that which concerns meaning-creating creatures.

Meaningful is an idea the human mind gives something.  I don't think anything can be meaningful outside of that context...

Replace 'human' with 'intelligent/conscious' and there we have the mess.
