Costa Surfing

Ive been in Costa Rica for the past six weeks. Been surfing twice a day pretty much daily. I leave here on thursday and im not looking foreward to it. Its cold back home. Here are a few shots I thought id share.

Yeah, I brought two in one bag. I took Spirit Air and they charged me $100 for the bag.

I've always wondered how people afford to do stuff like this.  I read most of "In Search of Captain Zero" and he talks about hearing about some swell and up and leaving like it's nothing.  I hear the same thing on TV.  How is that possible?

:inbred: How Dare You, Sir!  Whilst I am stuck in the midst of winter? Cold, frosty, onshore, turbulent violence stirring upon the ocean. 

Six weeks! Where is that huge cranky face!

Was it crowded?  Is one of those shots Pavone's?

I always wanted to try surfing, although I'd be worried about sharks in warm waters even though there's a low chance of being attacked.

The way I afford it is by working all summer and saving as much as I possibly can. You can get a round trip ticket for $450 or so where im from. You can stay on the beach in small rooms for $400 or so for a month. So you can get here and have a place to stay for a month for under $1000. If you have someone to split the room with thats even less. I can save $5000 in six months no problem. Food is relatively cheap here, especially if you cook. Ive been eating rice and beans every meal, literally. So, I live simply and surf daily.

The water hasnt been too crowded. I stayed and surfed in Hermosa. All those shots are Hermosa.

There arent many sharks here. I only saw one in six weeks. Im more worried about crocs. I saw a croc out in the ocean in Manuel Antonio, about an hour and some from Hermosa. There are tons of huge stingrays though. They randomly jump out of the water like ten feet in the air, its pretty cool.

I spent a month in Costa Rica in 2005, all of January. I took some really great pics of sunsets and surfers. I was in Manuel Antonio and Capos. Stopped through the original 420 shop place, Jaco. Spent a couple of nights in Montezuma (Monte-fuma the locals call it because of the freedom of smoking pot there). I liked the place but was on a shoestring budget. I still ate well and beers/cigs were .50 cents a bottle/pack in a lot of places. I will visit there again. I know someone who is relocating there soon and I will have a place to stay free the next time.:grin:

On the beach I went to there was some Nicaraguan people that toted ice chests full of fresh fish/food and all kinds of drinks for sale really cheap. They would take orders and cook this huge piece of fish and veggies grilled on a grill with jungle wood and then wrapped in banana tree leaves for a plate. It was some of the best food I ever had.  I think it was 2-3 bucks for what looked like a 10-15oz piece of fish. I just lay in my hammock and they brought it to me. And it was a totally nude beach! I am trying surfing next time.

Duuuuuuuuuuude, it looks like you've been shredding.  Nice barrel action in that second to last shot.

I'm moving to South America in January, definitely planning to take some trips to the surf meccas in C.R., El Salvador, etc.

Cold back home??  Do you live in SC or CA?  Either way, it's better than where I am, haha.  If it's SC, do you surf Chucktown and Savannah?

Yeah, I live in SC. Im like 1.5 hours north of Charleston. Ive never surfed in Folly, though, as close as I am. Any time there is a swell on the east coast I tend to head north into NC, even up into the OBX.

If I was surfing and saw a sting ray jump 10ft out of the water I would pee quite a lot.

Ever go to Wilmington?  Ive never surfed there but I hear great things.  I usually stay in the DE/MD/VA area beaches, which is pretty lame for surfing 99% of the time....but I used to live on O'ahu, Surfer's Paradise brah.  Can't wait to get to Costa Rica.

How do you rent a place for only one month?
I have to look into doing something like this. Great pictures.

Never surfed Wilmington. I usually surf Holden, Carolina Beach, Wrightsville. Ive seen some pretty sick pictures from MD. Costa is the place to be for surf. Hermosa has waves even when there is no swell. I surfed almost every single day with the exception of maybe three days.

There are places that are like small hotels/hostels, little cabinas. Its like renting a hotel room for a month, only not nice. You will have a room with a bed, maybe a small fridge, maybe a/c if your lucky, small tv with basic and a bathroom with cold shower and a sink. But its cool because you wake up in the morning, and the sun rises at 5:30 every morning, and you look out your window and see one of the best breaks in Costa Rica.

I would recommend coming here. You can travel around Costa on the bus system for super cheap. There are some super cool spots in Costa. Puerto Viejo is one of the coolest places Ive ever been. If anyone ever goes there stay at the hostel called Rockin J's. Believe me, they rock j's there. Its badass. I went into Panama too and stayed in Bocas Del Toro. That place is a lot of fun too.
