Television * 2
    #13620148 -

I don't have a TV. I haven't had one for some six years now. For the first couple of months, I missed it, but now I can't imagine having that vile thing be a part of my life.

I was traveling this week and staying in hotels. This is about the only time I watch TV... when I'm puttering around in a hotel room.

My god, how can you people watch that shit? I lost more brain cells last week to hotel room TVs than I have to all the meth I've ever smoked.

I'm soooo glad I'm home again. :scrambled:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Community television is :thumbup::thumbup:

My channel 02 consists of documentaries, debates, discussions, low-budget film, etc. It is the only thing I use the television for besides an occasional 'The Office' episode (besides videos games, DVDs).

I know what you mean though, when I am at friends houses and they are flipping through channels or something, I kinda get ADD; hate sitting there just watching whatever.

for breakfast it is fine if it is too cold to eat outside..and sometimes dinner.

we lived without a television for years as younger kids.cloud watching, catching snakes, and hiking were all entertaining enough...and traveled too much during teen years to sit and watch it....its mind melting for the most part and not something for hanging out with friends.

Look, I'm not in disagreement but one can make the same case for the internet.  Look at the time I waste listening to idiots at the shroomery (and being one). Then there's online shopping and just surfing out of boredom. There's porn and lots of religious and political shit and you can watch movies and tons of TV plus or minus the commercials.

Best solution is to be dead.

However, on TV there is <5% interesting content IMO. On the internet, maybe it's the same ratio of bullshit and nonsense content, but then the total amount of information is so great that just 5% of it makes for several lifetimes of interesting study - something you won't find on television.

But I think that "internet surfing" i.e. zapping from one site to the other without the patience to read much more than a few lines of text at each, can be as mind numbing as television, and possibly more so. And this kind of frantic surfing definitely will prpobably not improve one's ability to concentrate - possibly quite the opposite.

You can waste time everywhere. That's the one and only God-given right of individual freedom. :-)

-And yeah I also don't disagree with you I guess.

I rarely watch tv and when I do, I notice all these subtle things that try to get into your subconscious and brainwash you

I cut off the cable about 3 years ago and it's great not having to deal with commercials, reality "celebrities" and the general time waste. It seriously annoys me though when people find out and go "OMG! No TV?! What do you DO?"

TV is just a medium.  There are good and bad (and a whole lot of neutral) shows on TV.  I can understand that your decision to get rid of it could be good for you, to remove the temptation.  But that doesnt mean everybody watches TV irresponsibly.

I think your post reads a bit like a recovering alcoholic chastising others for drinking in moderation.

I'm considering canceling my cable service.  Almost all of the few shows I watch are available online.  I think we're rapidly coming to a point where the difference between computers, TV's, phones, etc. will be nothing more than the size of the screen.

The only thing hooked up to my TV is my computer.  Since I am a bit of a computer nerd, I have been doing this for about 10 years now.  The past few years I have seen lots of my less nerdy friends and family embracing the greatness of the HTPC.

It really is alot better to stream or download your shows.  It give you the power to tell the TV what you want to see, rather than broadcast or cable which essentially tells you what to watch.
