The Emerging Internet Consciousness
    #4254784 - 06/04/05 01:23 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Preface: I'm currently on the tail-end of a trip, so take this post with two grains of salt...

The Internet is a network of networks (a meta-network), a bit like a brain; each of us a neuron nucleus sending out an axon to other neurons. There are even different types of Internet connections (router to router, backbone connections from NOC to NOC, point-to-point DSL) like there are different kinds of neurons (afferent, efferent, and interneurons).

How about the idea that a meta-consciousness will emerge from this. If a large conglomerate of individual non-conscious neurons in our brain can give rise to consciousness, then perhaps a large conglomerate of conglomerates of neurons (you and me) can give rise to a meta-consciousness; the second derivative (acceleration), so to speak. There may even eventually be a third level meta-consciousness possible when/if we develop technology to contact other planets and the conscious Earth Internet links up with other planets' conscious Internet; a third derivative (rate of acceleration!) of sorts.

Brain cells die, but the whole continues. Eventually, if all humans die, then the universal whole continues as the Earth would be only a single meta-meta-neuron in the universal consciousness. Even if eventually the universe reaches it's thermal death, by then it may have connected as a single meta^3-neuron with other universes in the meta^x-universal consciousness...

All of this sounds like fantasy; it may also be another fantastic emergent property of complex biology like the basal consciousness we're all familiar with? Well, intoxicated babble or not, it at least sounds like a good premise for a novel, eh?  :mushroom2:

Isn't that what the Shroomery is?

I do believe indeed a community can grow beyond its individual members into a higher transmission of information, like the neurons into a brain. The problem with the internet is that, unlike neurons, individual posters are in extreme dissonance and conflict with many other posters, so that the joining of these units may result in quite a few problems.

It's dissonance among atoms that drives chemical reactions toward equilibrium, creating wonderful and useful stable molecules, and us.

If the internet follows this consciousness, will it be one consciousness, or will it be multiple ones? If there is indeed an internet consciousness, I believe it will follow the laws of natural selection, possibly joining and splitting the consciousness many times, and ridding some aspects while promoting others.

It's interesting the sort of cyber evolution the internet can follow purely as electrons on circuitry.

Well, in my delusion, the Internet will be a meta-consciousness as far beyond our conception as our own consciousness is beyond the conception of a single neuron (which some interpretations of Quantum Mechanics suggest may also be concious in some way). It may be so far beyond us that we will not even be aware of it. For all we know, it is already forming thoughts in the fabric of IP messages. We primitive consciousnesses can only see discrete email, MP3 files, and Shroomery posts, but in the core torrent of the IP bitstream, which to us looks like random noise, may be the essence of the second derivative.

Analogous to a primitive person getting the algebra of speed but not getting-it with respect to the calculus of acceleration.

I think you see the EIC more on very focused sites or forums, such as the Cultivation forums or places like Overgrow.com. Another place I hang out on is kvr-vst.com where all sorts of information is exchanged about music software such as reviews, ideas, bugs, collaborations; etc. In these avenues, the rate of growth far exceeds what one individual could achieve.

Here on S&P, no riddles will be solved. We have no common goal; no specific place where we are headed and thus it is extremely chaotic.

I can imagine many other fields like AIDS research or the Human Genome Project benefit greatly from the interenet and the accelerated and timely exchange of data.

No swami, no riddle will be solved, the beginning of time and life will not be figured out here in the S&P forums, but there have been many a trip, and many a nights that I lay awake in bed pondering the ramblings of you, or Gomp, or diploid which is another viewpoint I was unaware of. With this psychological amplification I think we all subconsciously help each other grow in a way that self thought cannot acheive, which is openning the floodgates of various points of view that regularly we would not be prone to personal deliberation.

Ya, but why go so far as to attribute this meta-consciousness solely to the internet network? This global network is of our own creation, it is the extension of ourselves. It will not have a consciousness of its own since it is directly in relation with us.

I prefer talking about a collective (un)consciousness, and the internet, by connecting us from around the globe, serves as the most powerful tool to reinforce it and make it denser.
