From a social justice perspective I'm all for it. The gay-rights campaign isn't about whether or not you personally accept gays, it's about the respect they deserve out-of-hand as law-abiding citizens.
That said, gays have put up with so much persecution for so long you can hardly blame them for their enthusiasm and personal involvement in the gay-rights campaign.
I would say that if any type of ideological reverberation is causing this type of anxiety, it's the monolithic homophobia which until less than fifty years ago conditioned us to instinctively fear and exclude "men who love men." It was so strong that most people took up this position unconsciously, and now that the issue is a conscious one it creates a lot of fucked-up anxieties as fallout.
So I agree the culture is in upheaval dealing with the implications and that it's natural. Still, there's something deeply shocking about the idea that we (and I include myself in this, having been through it) are afraid to love our friends. What, are you supposed to hate them or be indifferent to them? Just what is a friend if not someone you love?
