I'm sure you've heard at least some mentions of the success with resveratrol. I looked into it though and I actually don't understand whether it is through anti-oxidant mechanism or in other ways. There is a good TED Talk called "Can We Eat to Starve Cancer", where this guy talks about a bunch of studies that show positive results from different antioxidants. But the mechanism he focuses on is antiangiogenesis, which has something to do with restricting blood flow to cancerous cells.

Yeah, actually the guy who might have been the one to start research on resveratrol or discovered it's mechanism or something, spoke at my school...all the biochem profs were pumped to see him. He was showing it being used to reduce the risk of cancer.

Here's the wiki link:

3-5g would be pretty spendy...

I'll have to check out that TED talk, thanks for the suggestion.

Ok, I'm super tired but I couldn't resist, I had to find out more....here's a paper by that guy, I'll have to follow up on this.

fazdazzle said:
They do; they stop oxidation.

The problem is getting them to places where oxidation is happening. This is happening throughout your entire body.

This makes me wonder how effective dietary antioxidants are...it's probably just a do what you can scenario, where adding antioxidants in every once in a while can help, but it might not. My prof said oxidation is just a consequence of being alive.

I dunno, I'm open to seeing some studies showing antioxidant supplementation efficacy, if anyone has some.

It's quite simple to put vitamin c to the test. Take a couple of grams of vit c every hour until saturation is reached (you will get the shits at saturation). Normally saturation will be reached around 10 grams unless you are sick. Once saturation is reached, ease off on the vit c unless you enjoy diarrhea.

Then try the same test when you have a cold or flu. The last time I had the flu I took 1 gram on the hour for 12 hours then 4 grams before bed and another 4 grams about 2 am and still hadn't reached saturation. My flu was practically gone the next day and I still hadn't reached saturation, this demonstrates that the vitamin c was still reacting with the virus and its metabolites (these metabolites are a major cause of the flu reaction).

I prefer ester C in a non-chewable tablet. The chewable tablets are quite acidic and will erode tooth enamel, especially in high dosage.

I don't think you should do the saturation thing with ester C. I read that the high-dose regime is strictly a guideline for ascorbic acid.

This may be true of vitamin C, but if you dosed that high with a fat soluble vitamin like E or A you'd probably run into problems.

I might have to try megadosing ascorbic acid next time I get sick though. I have tried it before but I think I only ate 4-6 grams a day.

very interesting stuff, could you say... do something simialar with an omega complex to reach saturation for some period of time

Don't try it with anything else. It is easy to overdose on many vitamins. Vitamin C is water soluble, so an oversaturated blood-supply is easily eliminated, but not even all water-soluble vitamins are safe. Like b6 in high doses.

by omega complex do you mean a mixture of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids? This is basically the composition of grass fed beef fat. So if you eat a lot of greasy hamburger you will eventually reach saturation and fall asleep (see 'Man vs Food"). If you keep a high enough saturation for an extended period of time you will probably need to get some larger pants.

And don't play around with mega doses of any vitamins. Do your research. Some are very toxic in anything larger then the micro-gram range.

The extent that Vit C helps with a cold or flu has been PROVEN, and it only has to do with a desiccating effect, not anything to do with the virus itself. Better off taking something that will actually dry you up.

I would recommend green smoothies! I just made another thread on this with a couple of recipes. I whole heartedly recommend them. Do some internet research!

My top ones would probably be:
Yerba Mate - I use this instead of caffeine.  I use the extract pills, source naturals brand.  They have 50mg of caffeine but mate supposedly has other methylxanthines with a longer half-life so you get energy without anxiety and crash.

Also worth mentioning are a few by NOW foods, Once daily multi, grape seed extract, and EGCG (green tea).
