vitamins?
    #6559081 -

ill just tell everyone what im taking to try and stay healthy and someone let me know if im overdoing anything or underdoing anything.

i have been taking this combination for two days and feel good, but i know some people on here work out religously and can give me real advice. im going to start hitting weights soon so i want to be able to take the right things to get in shape without taking too many supplements. anywys, here goes:

Mega Men Multi-Vitamins
Skeletal Strength Multi-Vitamins
1 5-HTP pill daily (seems to help with anxiety)
1 boost energy shake high protein formula every morning (this also includes a lot of vitamins, or so it claims)

other than that i dont really eat well. but im willing to work hard. right now im 6'1" and about 165 but im all flabby. not much of a gut but not toned at all and skinny arms. i just want to get up to about 185 or 190 maybe and be really lean.

thanks for any help or advice

just fyi, most "energy" shakes are LOADED with sugar. I would suggest soy milk over a shake anyday, since soy milk has the protein and fatty acids you would want.

I'm a big proponent of creatine; I'm sure I'll get blasted by a bunch of meatheads who will recommend much more serious things you can take; but for the novice or beginner, it's great. I only use it for 1-2 months out of the year, usually in the spring when I'm getting back to a serious lifting regimen. It seriously reduces muscle fatigue (work out longer), muscle pain and recovery time (work same muscle group sooner).

After your "loading phase" you drink it right after a workout followed by a protein shake. The creatine actually helps deliver the necessary protein to your muscle. If your body is a sandcastle, protein's the sand and creatine works like a big ass shovel and pail.

Be careful too much vitamins can be just as bad as not enough.

i did not like taking 5-htp, it changed me some, but i ended up feeling as if i were "drugged" per se, from habitually taking pills designed to alter serotonin.

i would stay away from drugs and medicines and supplements designed to regulate mood, personally.

good healthy diets with lots of raw foods and plenty of water, and a lot of exercise and some meditation should really help the mood out a lot.

vitamins though i certainly have no objection to.

Yea too much vitamins at once doesnt really hurt but if you dont cycle them then they build up and can weaken your skeletal structure, etc.
Just make sure to go a few days without vitamins to help use up all the excess vitamins youve been taking (I like to only take vitamins on work-out days).

I also stay away from 5-HTP. I've taken it once and the bottle just sits among dozens of other supplements, antioxidants and vitamins that I take depending on the occasion.

I would recommend a good multi like NOW Adam (NOW is almost the only brand you'll ever need), an antioxidant like NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine) and maybe some fish oils and/or soy lecithin in place of the 5-HTP. If you buy acetyl choline you'll be getting a much better, albeit more expensive form of choline but the effects it has on mental cognizance is well worth it. I think you would at least enjoy soy lecithin more than 5-HTP. I'm personally too sketched with the stuff.

As mentioned above, creatine isn't a bad option either. Don't let the media scare you because it's the most studied ergogenic aid right up there with caffeine, the most widely used drug in the world. Creatine's just arginine, glycine, and methionine... three amino acids that help keep ATP and ADP up. This means more muscular strength and endurance. It's even helpful with your heart.

Don't bother with "loading" an abundance of creatine either. That may lead to creatinine which is a mild annoyance to your liver, but blown totally out of proportion. I would imagine that a caffeinated beverage would raise liver values much higher than micronized creatine monohydrate. It's just another option though. It's very cheap, you should pick some up one day and used it a couple of months down the road. It'll give you a small boost which is encouraging and good for a plateau. You don't need it or anything, just don't rule it out.

Above all though, a clean, consistent diet with a decent amount of ALL THREE macronutrients is good. You'll get your micronutrients and phytonutrients from a multi and antioxidant, so shoot for around a 40/40/20 ratio of carbs : protein : fat. Don't be afraid of saturated fats, so get a little in as well as dietary cholesterol unless you have a problem with your lipid profiles. People neglect everything because in abundance, it can be a detriment. However, this can be said for anything.

If you do not have the proper components, you will sadly go no where. Eat good, consistently, rest and train and it'll come. Above all, diet is the most important so put the most time, energy and efficiency (money, primarily) into this. Everything else will become second nature and you'll find yourself enjoying tweaking your regimen, seeing changes in the mirror and feeling a lot better physically and cosmetically. When the unprovoked comments start rolling in, you won't help but strut around with a small grin. You'll know that you've gone and done good

This is totally true. In the past 6 months I've started eating whole foods, buying organic/free range/natural meats and eggs, eating alot of high quality nuts, cutting out refined sugars, and basically being aware of my bodies cravings and trying to understand them - while addressing them with proper incontrol eating regimines.

In the past 3 months I've started eating alot of mushrooms, spinich, kale, carrots, beans, etc. + also less cheese, pork, beef, and sweets.

I've also started taking:

vitamin D (sunshine vitamin for the winter),
Zinc - to help with dandruff and body odor.
Vitamin C - general immunity booster.
Multi Vit - high quality general helper to make up what i dont get in
            my diet.
Omega 3-6-9
+
Wild Alaskan salmon oil - I wont comment but read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_oil

I also started going to the gym on Friday.. and have recently bought a bike (boosting my cardio and endurance considerably).

Needless to say, standing infront of the mirror, im shocked at how my body is shaping up, so easily.. I see a reflection of health.

And I bet after all that, and CONSISTENCY, your body probably fell in love with you for treated it right.

You can tweak so many small things and it makes a BIG impact over time. Cutting out the soda you might drink every day is the difference between living healthy or becoming insulin resistant and dying from an undetected blood problem that very well may run in your family. I would rather find a replacement for a daily soda than not enjoy the last 20 years of my life.

You can make healthy foods REALLY pay off, stretch out your buck and improve your quality of life significantly. Even with my now daily pot smoking regimen (I do take honest time off depending on my smoking frequency), I feel healthy as ever and the lifestyle is second nature. It's actually less stressful than before. So many benefits!
