The increase of cell phones is also a direct cause of hives dying off. Cell phones emit radiation and it messes up the bee's natural radar. Thats another theory.

im a little bit late on this thread i have been busy. that is a sweet setup man. maybe one day these will bring exotic edibles to everyones dinner table.

honey is awesome and we could put it in soda if we just extracted the sugars from it it would tast just like sugar. it would be way better than corn starch too. i have some mountain honey i stocked up on over the summer when i went to the nantahala national forest. i bought it from a guy that had 20 hives randomly placed in his backyard with different types of trees for different flavors.

lol. i had some friends over last night, one was an older brother of a friend who is a total genius and he knew about this whole colony collapse disease or CCD or whatever, I was drunk.

Anyway it was pretty interesting to see first hand that this is a real issue.

And just thinking about keeping bees on the side and doing my part for a whole area is pretty cool. do you get stung ever, probably not alot, huh?

Whenever I'm fishing with my brother we get ATTACKED by bees. idk what he does wrong. never happens when he isn't there. lol.

Hey Roger sorry to bump this thread but I was wondering how your operation worked out over this winter. Has the weather been good enough for you to start back up on work again.
Also I was wondering if you would be alright with me using your business as a discussion topic for a presentation in a  green business class I have.
Hey thanks for all the awesome work you do, and this setup is awesome, sorry if i shouldn't have bumped this I realize its several months old, but I would love an update on the project.

Sneak peek.  The problem we're having now during our very brief summer is finding refrigerator space for all the product we're generating, as we wait to deliver it to the stores. Definitely need to build a walk-in cooler. The LED lighting has been working perfectly.  I have about 80% LEDs with a few CFLs to supplement the lighting.  Total electric bill for the farm now that we're in full production has been running just under $20/month for the lights and ventilation blower. We've been pulling about 30 pounds per day from our underground farm pictured below, and at least another 20 pounds per day from our spent substrates we've moved outdoors by the creek.

We're only sending the indoor grown mushrooms to the grocery stores, and use the slightly buggy outdoor ones to trade for produce, beef, sawdust, etc., with our neighbors.

We painted the door pink.  We've been thinking of changing the name to the 'Pink Door Mushroom Farm' but haven't decided on that for sure yet.

Those shiitakes are beautiful! Much meatier than those we get around my way.

Is that your own strain? If yes (which I'm assuming it is) how long did it take you to develop it?

Those are all Shiitake 75 from aloha medicinals.  I have 23 commercial quality strains of shiitake and am in the process of testing them all on hardwoods, softwoods, bark, straw and local crop residues, plus a mixture of all in various proportions. The other 22 strains are in various stages of colonization, but I have fruited one of them on a combination of Douglas fir and Western larch.
