It's gorgeous, truly beautiful. I can't wait to see the finished product. Good work! Reminds me of Shulgin's lab, somehow. A video taped walk through would be cool, since most of us will probably never be able to experience a real walk through..

You should sell your products on here. I know I'd buy RR honey and mushrooms :yesnod:

How much do you predict a setup like this would run...., and what are the chances of setting one up in Virginia or North Carolina. Good stuff though, RESPECT!

At least he's got a cool celeb look-a-like unlike me. people say i look like John Lovits... I don't think I'm ok with that.

Oh and smooth move with the colonization heat. At the very least you might have to retrofit a small heating system for better air exchange. sounds like a very doable plan B if needed. maybe even stored solar energy with heating elements in the ground. A bitch yes, but think of what that would do to your resume!

We put about $30K into this, not counting 4 months of 12 hour days working to get it all done. A good portion of that was for gas considering the location and how far supplies had to be hauled to get them here.

We DO have the best honey anywhere.  There's no farmland near us, so our bees are not exposed to pesticides.  The nectar and pollen they collect is from wild raspberries, strawberries, thimble berries, plus apple, peach, pear and plum trees, and the millions of flower seeds we've spread around the area. There's also white and red clover in the meadows. Had we not kept all our honey for the bees and ourselves this year, we could have sold it many times over.  We should get at least 1000 pounds of honey next year, but there's a steady stream of locals knocking on the door asking for it.  I doubt we'll need to sell it online.

I like honey on my oatmeal. Brown sugar, Vanilla Extract, Honey, and right before you serve it put a little milk in it. AMAZING! RogerRabbit you inspire the shit out of me. Keep up the good work, your setup really is amazing.

We'd all be a lot healthier and diabetes would be virtually wiped out if people and corporations such as soft drink and cookie/pastry makers would swear off sugar and use honey instead.  We use it for everything from cooking/baking to sweetening coffee.  In fact, if I need a quick snack, I'll pour honey into the palm of my hand and eat it directly.

The biggest problem is that 2/3 of all beehives have been wiped out in the last five or so years.  Bees can't tolerate constant exposure to pesticides, which when it doesn't kill them outright, weakens them to the point they can't defend themselves against parasitic mites.

I'm taking this thread a bit off-topic, but I fed my bees with spent shiitake blocks last summer, and noticed in the fall when I went to treat for mites, they didn't have any.  I suspect something in the shiitake killed the mites.  Next year, I'll investigate this farther.  It might be the cure for CCD.  I haven't lost a single hive to CCD, although 90% of beekeepers have.

Aw, but just because you don't NEED to sell it online, doesn't mean you shouldn't! You could sell small little bottles for like 10x what you charge your neighbors, I'd buy  I'm just kidding around, I'm just bitter I won't be getting any home made non-pesticide honey this year :frown:

Also, since something like 2/3s of colonies have died recently from CCD, you're in a very good position to fill that 2/3 void in honey production. :congrats: I wouldn't doubt that small pesticide exposure over many years contributes to CCD somehow, but I'm not a bee keeper or expert by any means. It's like drinking water, sure, the levels of lithium may be 10000x less than a dose, but we've all been drinking it SINCE BIRTH :crankey:

Also, I had no idea that bees could eat mushrooms. This brings up the interesting prospect of bees eating psilocybes. Would this cause them to subsequently lace their honey with psilocybin? Or maybe they'd be tripping too hard to actually produce honey for the hive :rofl2: You could end up with honey squares, triangles and other geometric patterns instead of honey comb!

The problem with pesticides, and especially herbicides, is that the bees continue to forage the treated flowers, and then bring the chemical-laced nectar and pollen back to the hive.  It's then used to make and fill the comb that the bees use for a decade or longer.  Over time these pesticides build up to toxic levels in the comb, making the larvae weak, which in turn makes them unable to fight off mites, robber bees, yellow jackets, and other parasites.  Eventually, the entire colony of adult bees says 'fuck it' and flies away, leaving the emerging brood behind to fend for itself, which it can't do without workers, thus the whole hive dies out.  This, so the theory goes, is the leading cause of CCD.

Unfortunately for the rest of us, honey is only a byproduct to most commercial beekeepers.  They get paid thousands of dollars by farmers to bring the hives during pollination season to pollinate the crops, since through irresponsible use of chemicals, the farmers have long since killed off the ferrel bees and other pollinators, thus they need beekeepers to carry their bees around the country on trucks.  This further adds to the stress, and exposes the bees to parasites from other hives they interact with in the field.

I don't jerk with my hives.  They're here for mine and my neighbors orchards, and I don't take them elsewhere. All of my neighbors up here are organic gardeners. That's why our honey is the best of the best.  The bees are healthy and everything they feed on is deep in the forest away from chemicals.
