But what happens if the family isn't able to provide such an education?
Let's face it, lots of people aren't working on themselves unless they were raised with this habit, and if this habit wasn't formed in these parents, then what education can they give to their kids? What emotional control can they teach them, what curiosities and passions can they ingrain in their minds, when they're an emotional wreck driven by superstition and fear?
I think that the educational system, at least in this context and at this point in time, could do a much better job than the parents, not only because they have the means and the knowledge obtained though psychological, educational, and neurological research, but also because, realistically and rationally, this step would serve everyone's best interests.
Sure, ideally, the parents should take care of this kind of education for their kids, but is this happening? No. So if this isn't happening, should those who actually have right means and motivation keep waiting for the parents to grow smart, just because of this expectation, or should they start using newer and better educational techniques already? What seems more reasonable to you?

Parents should be better parents. Individualism has pushed itself to the point in our country where people care more about themselves than their kids.

Our education system has teachers that are unqualified and just bad at their jobs.

To me it seems like there are two problems with education: at home and the schools. You need to improve both if you want to fix all of the problems. Saying 'just schools' need to improve is not going to fix any of the fundamental developmental and educational problems children face when growing up. Saying 'just parents' isn't going to fix the problem either.

Education is not 100% at school or 100% at home. It is a mixture of both and as a country and communities we should try to improve both areas instead of just focusing on the failings of the school system and using it as a scapegoat for our own deficiencies at home.

Parents should be better parents.

Should?

There's no reason that healthy psychology can't be a major focus in education. They ultimately teach what we feel is important.

And how are you going to make them do that, if they don't know how?

What does individualism have to do these self-preoccupied and unskillful parents?
People are bad parents because this is what they can be, because they don't know how to be different, and because the little understanding they have has to be used to meet the closest thing to self-interest. Every person works, first and foremost, towards their own interests, only that what this self-interests represents differs from individual to individual.
People set their goals according to their means and understanding. You can't build a rocket out of cow crap.

Agreed.
Seems to me that you misunderstood my point, which is that, in order to make any kind pf progress, it is necessary to quit holding unrealistic expectations.
Waiting for the parents to become better and smarter, if everything else stays the same until now, is like waiting for Jesus.

I am not saying that it is only schools that should change. I agree that both parents and schools are essential in child development.
It all comes down to what's achievable in the moment, and what's most likely to happen. Parents aren't conducting any scientific research and most of them aren't reading books on child education. The educational system, however, already has this kind of knowledge. This information is already there, all it has to do is to be implemented. If this will happen, it will also change the face of parenting, because, in time, all these kids which will be educated in all these new ways will have a greater understanding and insight than their parents, and will become better parents. This change just has to start from somewhere.

I admire your faith in government to solve all of societies problems.

I also agree that a better curriculum and better methods in schools would help, see my first post.

However, if you are placing your kids education entirely on the faith of the school system then you are failing your child. Every parent plays a role in their child's development, the psychology you keep pimping points to this. In fact every website I found about developmental psychology has stated that the parent is the child's first and foremost teacher.

The lacking of the education system is not an excuse for parents of today. If we wait on schools to solve the problems of parents we will always be behind, this should be painfully obvious.

Better education starts at home and our school systems need reform.

The system indoctrinates individuals to absorb information like a sponge without utilizing intelligent discrimination.

Children are not taught to develop critical thinking skills that are necessary to judge the value/utility/validity of information they are exposed to.

Said children grow into adults who do not question the authority figures.

This is why the educational system is a failure.

Elaborate, please.

The way I see it is that authority figures have ulterior motives.

A "non authority figure" could be wrong, but I see less motives for their being deliberately manipulative.

The system is setup so everyone can keepup. Most teachers in kindgergarden and the early grades are women because women get along better with children because they are more like children themselves. The system is practically geared towards women this is why 75percent of todays universities are full of women where the fuck are all the men? Its not about seeking knowledge its about seeking a peace of paper. Men actually are more intellectually geared then women the fact there are more women in school is evidence it's design is flawed.

That's about it really.
It's not only authority figures that need to be questioned, explored, figured out. Do you need an explanation on why this is so?

The authorities seem to me to be the most dangerous individuals.  Those that wish to control the thoughts and actions of other people are indeed a threat.

A good teacher tells someone to think for themselves.  This is very different from controlling psychopaths.

I'm sorry, this sounds terribly flawed and unrealistic to me.
How did you reach these conclusions?
Through which means did you obtain the information that women are more like children and that men are more intellectually geared? The only thing that might lead one to think in these terms, IMO, could be some more or less isolated social trend, that doesn't say anything about human nature and the genetic inclinations of the sexes.

I really don't think it is a social trend, I'm just giving you my honest opinion. I think its actually true but nobody wants to admit the differences between the sexes. I think men and women are equal, what men have with intellect women compensate with more wisdom and down to earth thinking, I find women more grounded and practical.

I seriously did purposely fail out of high school. I new I wouldn't graduate for three months and still went to class everyday until my councelor (also my next door neighbor) told me to just go home, it wasn't worth my time. There was 3 days of school left.

IMO schools suck because of school boards. We shouldn't be taught facts through the filter of the dominate political ideology. Zero tolerance needs to go. Kids try new things, it's damn near the definition of being a kid. Homework is fucking stupid for some students. I aced tests all the way throughout school, I failed out because I refused to do the homework.

We should integrate teaching logic after learning the alphabet, alongside basic math and reading skills. If you can add, you can understand the basics of logic.

So much of my life was wasted in public schools. Nearly everything I learned, I did so because I enjoyed learning and enjoyed the subject, outside of the school system.

I guess I can thank them for the fundamentals though

Every individual strives for control, it just depends on how they do it and how aware they are of their surroundings, circumstances, and meaning of reality. Some are able to think of ways of satisfying their best interests in a way that doesn't bring any costs to those around them, while others can't think in these terms and the results aren't so convenient for the people around them.
Wanting to have control is not a bad thing, and some people might even do this while admitting it.
Besides, nobody really "controls" another human being. We all make our own decisions according to our means and understanding, even in the moment we choose to listen to this person or that person.

Quote:

What does thinking for oneself mean, in your opinion? How much should this thinking for oneself be applied, and to whom? Most importantly, by using which tools are these kids supposed to think for themselves?
I think it would be a terrible mistake to tell a kid to only question authority, when there are so many other things, such as their own minds and emotions for instance, that need to be questioned just as much. You still didn't give me any answer on why it is important to only question authority.

You're free to believe whatever you want, but please don't talk of it as a fact... unless you really want to get into it and try to prove the verity of your claims.
I never said sexes were equal, but I think that people aren't equal in general, from individual to individual, regardless of their sex.
What, in your opinion, is the behavior of a person with intellect, and what is the behavior of a person with wisdom and down to earth thinking?
