Remember, 1-2 CC's/ML's per half pint.
Shake well before every jar and i like to give a little shake between each hole to insure even spore deposit.

And watch a good sterile inoculation video for a visual experience.
Such as the Rabbits PF jar videos if you haven't already seen them.

You've already been more help than I could have imagined for one night, but while you're here I may as well get all of my questions out of the way

What am I supposed to do to keep the trays moist? Just put the tray on top of the perlite in my SG terrarium, or will I have to grow them seperately from the cakes? Also, do I need to directly mist the trays or is that just for cakes only?

I've read that a 1:4 casing:substrate layer is appropriate, but I've also read that I need a bottom layer of vermiculite which apparently I don't so I just want to run that by you as well to make sure I'm getting it right. So if I've got 4 inches of substrate in the tray, I need 1inch of verm on top?

When taking the colonized substrate out of the jars and 'breaking it up', is there a specific way you recommend I do this to avoid contamination?

Thanks a million man, you deserve a 5 star rating :super:

I like to keep them moist with a cool mister.
I only directly mist the casing layer before the mycelium breaks through.
After that I mist towards the walls.

I like using a mini greenhouse with a cool mist and air pump for trays but a SGFC will work.

I use approx 1:4/5 ratio myself and works great for me. But no matter how deep I go, I never make my casing deeper then 1 inch. If your doing pure verm I would probably go less half inch. Just my personal preference. My ratio preference varies a lot based on the materials. I would research and see what you think would work best for set up.

You don't need the verm layer on bottom, it wont hurt though. It is usually used for things like mono tubs where the water runs down the sides and accumulates in the bottom.

Smack your fully colonized spawn jar on something kinda hard yet soft (Like a inflated tire) to break it up a bit then kinda roll it around on its side in your hands. Then you can just sprinkle it over your un-colonized substrate. If you can use a still air box and be very sterile with the spawning step.

Why thank you!

hmm, I was under the impression that I was just supposed to use multiple PF Jars as my substrate (so it will be all colonized) since I think I'm probably not experienced enough to spawn to bulk. Unless of course it's easy, as that's probably about all I can handle

The uncolonized substrate is simply just my BRF cakes smashed up but not inoculated?

Oh so your trying to do like a giant cased BRF cake then basically right?
Just using other colonized BRF to spawn it correct?
If so that does make some big differences. I was thinking you were casing grains. For the most part its gonna be similar though.

I don't like spawning BRF/verm because it contaminates far too easy when not sealed in a jar IMOE.
Can be done though.
Sterilize your un-colonized BRF/verm.
Just use a glove box/still air box and crumble the colonized BRF spawn over the layers of un-colonized BRF substrate. If using those regular mouth jars you'll have to use a sterile spoon to spoon it out of the jar. Once you have all your layers of substrate and spawn layed out in the pan cover with foil. If there isn't much space left in the top I would probably poke a dozen small slits with a razor blade. leave it alone for about 10 days then give it a quick peek to see if the top layer is fully colonized. After that I'd give it a few consolidation days.

And in that case I would then just carefully turn the pan upside down, pop it out of the pan. Then dunk it for 6 hours and just roll it in verm.
I would basically treat it like a giant PF cake.

Why would you do this, Not only do giant cakes preform worse then smaller cakes spawning to uncolonized BRF is down right risky. Why not spawn to Manure/verm/gypsum or coir/berm/gypsum.

Its 1 cc per jar and you never shake the jar after inoculation

To the OP, Dont spawn your cakes to more BRF and also dont crumble and case the,. I would fruit them as is Cakes preform better if they were cased. You can spawn them to bulk like manure or coir. Also for now on I would be a bit wary of Khaos advice

Well the reason I have to 'crumble' the cakes is because I will be using regular mouth jars for my first batch, and according to sources on shroomery it's not going to be possible to get it out whole or else I would simply just use cakes. The supplies I have are solely the PF Tek materials(verm, perlite, brf, SG terrarium, etc), so I am simply looking for a way to grow mushrooms using these materials and regular mouth jars. With my other batch using wide mouth I think I've got it under control, but I'm still lost on what I can do with my first batch with regular mouth. I don't have any manure or coir or anything of that sort to spawn to, strictly PF Tek cakes materials. What can I do?

Well I would not spawn to more BRF. Try to get some coir they sell it at pet shops. Worst comes to worst crumble and case them

Can I just use completely colonized BRF jars? Just use a lot of them? or do I have to spawn to something uncolonized?

4. I will need to buy all of the 1/2 pint glass jars as well. What jars I buy is obviously very important, so recommendations for what brands/types of jars are very much appreciated as well. Also, can I get these at say a walmart, or should I be ordering these online? --

I use

Way cheaper, can't drop and bust them and I get a nice sized cake.. have used with WBS and Rye Flour(PF tek) cakes.

I was referring to shaking the syringe not the jar.
(What kinda idiot would try shaking a PF jar anyway? )
For PF 1/2 pint 2cc's is a little overkill I personally use 1.5cc's just my preference. Works great for me.

I agree that spawning manure/coir would be a better choice, in fact up until my previous bit of advice I thought he was planning on doing WBS spawn.

I certainly would go a different route, but he wants to get going on it right away with the materials he has. With the BRF regular mouth jars this is one of very few options he has. So therefor I gave him the advice to go about this route.

I beg to disagree. My preferred route (for cubes anyway) is rye spawn to Hpoo/straw+coir. But in my experience giant cakes in spawn bags have been much more efficient to me than jars, however this is like most things is a personal outcome and may differ for others.

I do apologize but I wanted insure my advice was interpreted in the correct context that I intended its meaning to be.

And to shea again specifically:
I do hope you didn't read that with my words being in a snotty voice in your head as that was not the tone I intended. I've been reading this forum for years and since you joined I've always thought your advice was very decent and accurate IMHO.

I've decided to just wait til my wide mouth jars come

In the future I am definitely going to look into spawning to bulk though. Seems cakes are relatively easy but don't produce that large of a yield. Is there a technique that shows considerable quantity grows but is still relatively easy?

i did 2cc per jar for no real reason. and although i regret it, seeing as i could have knocked up 10 jars instead of 5, every single one is doing better than expected (first grow).

Seems I'm pretty good at lacking common sense as I bought a light fixture the exact width of my closet =P. Can only get it in there if I wedge it in completely(possible fire hazard if the plastic gets hot? idk), otherwise I'll have to either lay it diagonally or vertically in my closet next to my SG terrarium. Will that affect the mushrooms in any way if the light is coming primarily from 1 direction (and subsequently light will be closer to half of the shrooms)? If so, should I rotate my terrarium daily or something?

Smart man.
My favorite routes to go are:
Depending on species.
(Remember these are my opinions.)

Agar wedge to Rye berry spawn.
Rye spawn to Hpoo/coir or straw with gypsum.
Cased with with Verm/peat with hydrated lime (calcium carbonate is more practical for most people as HL can be difficult to work with and requires an accurate PH meter).
Kept in a mostly self sustaining Martha/greenhouse setup.

For relatively little work and big yield I like to go,
Agar wedge to Rye berry spawn.
Rye spawn to straw in a industrial garbage bag.
Fruited in a massive SGFC with a cool mist.
(I love cultivating PE this way).

Of course if you live in the proper regions its possible to cultivate in your yard and IMHO the hardest part of that is just making sure you harvest before they over mature.

Just my opinions, what works for me may not work for other.

Dude do yourself a favor and wait for the jars! In the meantime read read and read everything you can that will help you out. When your jars get there you'll be ready to roll. Then once you start running out of BRF and Vermiculite. Order some rye and start reading about that everything you need to know is a click/search away!
