A precision or a shotgun universe?
    #12260819 -

If life were so precise and directed, then why do humans need a million sperm to fertilize one egg instead of one? Why do many animals need to have a thousand young for one to survive?

Likewise with life on planets (theoretical). Most planets are too large or too small or too hot or too cold or too close to the galactic center or too far from the galactic center or lacking a huge 'vacuum cleaner' planet to protect from space debris. On and on go the limiting factors so tha maybe 1 in a hundred thousand or more planets may support life.

All of life appears to have a shotgun approach; an enormous scattering wherein failure is the norm rather than success.

Where is the cosmic director behind this very sloppy method?

Why is something without life a failure?

I would say the universe is pretty precise, as it's only happening one way. Sure, it's happening in what appears to be a random way-- but it's not like the universe is trying for something [life] and either being sucessful or failing, it just is existing.

Unless you believe in a conscious creator of life, then maybe your idea holds some merit. But even then, one could just say the creator intended it to be as such, for whatever reason.

Yay! Once again a PSPer has totally redefined the accepted meaning of a word - or perhaps is just ignorant of what precise means. :congrats:

I think you are underestimating the vastness of this universe.

If you imagine it way huger.. the planets harboring life might even be really close.

To you and me.. it seems as though we're pretty far away from each other.
From outer space , that would be an inch to your eyes.

I think it really depends on the viewpoint.

Yay! Another nonsensical response seeing as how vastness does not factor into the (theoretical) ratio of planets with life to those without life.

Well this is the part I really agree with but it's not like the universe is trying for something [life] and either being sucessful or failing, it just is existing.

Laying a thousand eggs is somehow not trying for continued life?

The shotgun approach is better than precision in many cases.  Thats why humans still make shotguns.

We have only to follow the thread of the hero path, and where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god; where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves; where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence. And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.

Premise 1. If there was a cosmic creator the universe would be different.
Premise 2. The universe is not different.

Therefore there is no cosmic creator.

No try, do or do not.  Nature and evolution do not try imo, mutations happen and if beneficial, carry on.

I may not be a walking dictionary but I have a well enough understanding of what precise means.

Quote:
precise [prɪˈsaɪs]
adj
1. strictly correct in amount or value a precise sum
2. designating a certain thing and no other; particular this precise location
3. using or operating with total accuracy precise instruments
4. strict in observance of rules, standards, etc. a precise mind

Tell me how the universe is deviating from this definition?

1. According to the law of conservation of energy the universe is, and will continue to, remain at the same value-- in other words it is a precise sum.

2. There is only one universe, as far as I am aware of.

3. As far as I know, the universe operates in a completely accurate way-- if accuracy is a quality that can even be attributed to the universe. I can't even think of any ways to test the accuracy of the universe.

4. It would appear that the universe has laws that govern it, and we are able to observe the universe observing these rules precisely.

Care to explain further how I am wrong in saying the universe operates in a precise manner? Or perhaps explain further how you could say the universe 'fails' at anything.

I already pointed out the lack of accuracy in reproduction.

Everything follows the law of physics. So what?

I think thats a stretch.  Precision relies on an external metric or goal and unless you have faith, there is no such thing for the universe.  It would be more accurate to say the laws we invent are precise in describing the universe and not the other way around. (that is, the laws dont govern the universe - the universe governs the laws)

The universe isn't a Swiss Watch or made with German Precision precise isn't a word to describe Things cause well it isn't

Having said that it just amazes me how most folks can ignore physical reality and how Hollywood has just jaded pretty much everyone.  Walt Disney is Evil.
