I have been looking for a good azure tek. Im not sure if i have been looking in the wrong places, i just havent found much of anything new. I guess i was gonna do the tek using sawdust and bran ala pf style cakes. that tek says to spawn carboard then wood chips. My plan was to us the jars to spawn wood chips, skipping the cardbord. Once i have a bunch of colinized chips i was gonna dig a hole, chuck that in there with some larger pieces of hard wood. And wait till next fall. So here are my questions.
Is there a better way to start out beside using cakes if i am using muntispore?
Can i just spawn to wood chips, skipping the cardboard?
How does one prepare the chips? Pasturize, PC, soak?
I have seen pics of colinized chips in a jar. Can i just inject muntispore into pc chips or shavings and go from there?
Do i hve to use up space in my incubator for azure myc. since they are cold type shroomies. would room temp be ok to colinize chips?

thanks Anno! When i ckecked out the faq i was looking under "Mushroom Cultivation FAQ: Other species than P. cubensis" not under what you linked me too. shows how long it has been since i had to look something up in the faq. Easy enough, i guess ill just us rye then spawd the chips. Just one more question. I know its probably better to us the incubator. but are azures different than cubes when it comes to incubator temps. Can i get by with room temp? Thanks again !

from my experiments (not scientific by any means)cardboard is to hardwood as manure is to hay .

He?s saying (I think) that cardboard is a processed wood, the same as manure is processed hay....

i soak corrugated cardboard and peal it apart and discard the outside layer .the outside doesn't absorb as well and tends to dry out quickly .
the inside corrugated part makes for excellent casing, it colonizes vary quickly . it is also useful for spawning sawdust and wood chips .
as substrate, its not so good, it gets eaten up too quickly .

Substrate made for Shiitake, Reishi, or Maitake might work. They are usually made from a mixture of hardwood oak sawdust, wheat bran, and millet.

Head to Office depot and look in the packing dept.There is shredded cardboard packing that is almost too perfect!Once wetted and in jars it compresses slightly but leaves plenty of air space.and forms perfect "cakes" with cyans and azures that break apart easily for spawning beds.
PS I add powdered alder (1tblsp/pint)to the mix and I have good results making spawn this way from raw prints good luck! WR

do you spawn these cakes directly to outdoors ? if that is the case, you have saved me a lot of work .
can it really be that easy ?

I lay down strait alder sticks about 2" dia in a hole about 6" deep like a floor.I scatter 1 cake /ft2 and cover with shredded cardboard packing about 3" deep then 2 cakes/ft2 with a layer of alder(I like the Lil' chief hardwoods for smoking meat for this, as the particle size is just right)on top.I then scatter the forest debris that I scraped back to dig my "hole" back on top. Do this in spring and if you've chosen you site well fall will bring your first flush. Good luck  WR
