I have never had any problem with them.  Well, actually, I had a couple problems when I was younger.  I was basically molested by a gay guy............just kidding.  Although I did get propositioned few times.

I don't like setting up special protected classes of any kind.  Hate crime laws piss me right the fuck off.

I agree, laws that seperate race, religion, sexually orientation, they all go against the idea of NOT discriminating based on those same qualities.

Discriminate - recognize or perceive the difference

I hardly believe skin pigment, what gender you have a relationship with or what creator you believe in should have any weight under the law.

Cool. So long as you don't consider gay marriage to be a "special privilege."

I think the way government treats all marriages is an abomination.

I think most religious people (myself I'm a Evangelical Christian but a good bit more liberal than most of 'em... so I think I can speak with some authority on this) have a problem with it because they think of marriage as a religious institution, and since most religions (certainly Christianity) condemn homosexuality they feel that they shouldn't be allowed to marry.

That said, personally I think it's a massive double standard, as, at least in Christianity (the predominant religion in the US obviously), God views all sins as equal, as any deviation from perfection is . IOW, stealing your brother's chocolate bar is just as offensive as to God as murdering your brother. That's not to say it's as serious, but both are sins, and both will get you sent to hell, if that makes sense.

So personally I think that if Christians really want to be fair about it, they'd have to keep anyone who's sinned from marrying. Obviously, not gonna happen.

That said, and I know I'm probably gonna be mocked and criticized for this and called a bigot, I'm still conflicted about this... because I just don't see God allowing gay marriage when he basically called it an abomination.

I think it's obvious that gay people should have the right to equal rights as married couples (civil unions etc.), but I know then that you can bring up the "separate but equal" argument, which is true, and I can't really refute it. So really, I'm just really conflicted

The problem with that is most people view marriage as the legal document issued by their rspective state, and not simply a religious union.  If religious people had their own seperate "religious" marriages, without state involvement or a state issued marriage license that's fine, but to deny gay people recognition from the government is wrong.  Denying them recognition from the church is fine IMO.

I completely agree.

I do wonder though, how much is a fair price to ask when I sell my daughter into slavery as God expressly allows? See Exodus 21:7. :flowstone:

That's where I have a problem-I don't think he did.If God exists, then in my opinion the greatest offense mankind has ever constructed unto him is to write the bible and call it his literal word and will.

And,of course,it just raises the age-old point of if homosexuality is wrong in God's eyes, why does he make people gay?
Though if people subscribe to the theory that homosexuality is a choice and not a unalterable facet of who a person is,the obvious counterpoint is to ask them if they would be able to choose to be turned off by women from now on and be aroused only by the hot man-love.
Which is blatantly stupid,as I'm sure you would be soon told.
People can't help their sexual orientation-it is who they are/how they're made.

Personally, should God be floating around up there,I don't think he'd have any problem with homosexuality.Hell,it's just two people showing love for each other. In this world,we need all the love we can get!How could a loving God abhor two free-thinking individuals who meet, are attracted to the qualities, personalities, hell,to the soul of the other person?
I think if he exists,he'd be more pissed off with the Christians, spreading hate and intolerence-doubly so in "His name"!

I have to take the side of gay people just on the basis that I've never been harassed by a gay person in my life, but have yet to meet a Christian fundamentalist that isn't a self centered asshole bent on controlling what other people do in the privacy of their own homes. Why are so many religious people obsessed over other people's private lives?

Re: Gay People vs. Religious People [Re: astral_stardust]

I'm not going to get into a huge argument on this because arguing over the internet about something like this is stupid, especially when no one's going to change their minds.

But I think it's pretty obvious that God in the bible is against homosexuality. He basically wipes out two whole cities because of it in Genesis (after they tried to rape two angels).

Then again in the NT, Paul is very explicit:

Romans 1:26-32, "For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them."

I don't think it gets much more obvious then that.

And yes, you can find all kinds of weird laws and rules in Deuteronomy and Exodus, stuff I really can't explain except to say that Paul says that the "Law" (OT Jewish Law) was given to show us the impossibility of following all the rules and the need for something to cover us.

Please note, I'm not a gaybasher or anything of the sort, and any "Christian" who is, is surely a hypocrite, because they've for sure broken just as many if not many more of God's laws than any gay guy. And like I said, they're all equal.

Alright I'm done. Now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna smoke some herb and listen to some Zeppelin
