taking away tax exemption for religious organizations?
    #5718417 -

just wondering what argument someone here may have in response to this.  Tax-exempt status of religious organizations is arguably a blatant link between church (or whatever) and state.

I think that churches should be subject to the same scrunity & taxation as non-profit organizations. There is no legal reason for them to be exempt from both reporting AND taxation. If they use all of the revenue they generate for benefit of the community, they will still be tax-exempt. If they pay their officers a ridiculous amount of money, or spend the bulk of their revenues on non-service-related expenses, they would have to explain themselves to the IRS.

My dad once explained that the power to tax is the power to destroy. But then I wondered why the government should have the power to destroy a company, but not a church. In a way, I think the tax-exempt status of churches actually violates the separation of church and state. Afterall, it means that the government has to define which groups are churches and which aren't, which means that if the government doesn't like a certain sect, they can discriminate against them by denying them tax-exempt status.

That seems fair.

Churches are exempt from taxation primarily because they function as a non-profit organization. However, if a church were to misappropriate donations, it is reasonable that there should be legal repercussions.
