here's a question for anyone who believes depression is passed genetically and has strong biological links: Why is it steadily increasing?

Because the world is steadily getting shittier; let's face it, there's just way too many people.

It's one thing to simply enjoy a style of life that one enjoys, but it's another thing altogether to refer to another person's choice as "wrong" or to rationalize their behavior as being pathological or resulting from some sort of inadequacy or failing so as to create a sense of superiority or separation as yet another projection of a personal fear or control issue.

That would be explaining depression as a reaction to the environment, not as a biological disorder.

edit: Or are you suggesting that people are selecting depressed individuals in hopes that their offspring will prematurely end their lives?

If so, that flies in the face of evolutionary theory.

I know, I just wanted to add my two cents.

Nah, I wasn't suggesting that at all; I'm just saying that the fact that there's too many people to means that there's less rationing out of resources per person, and each person has to work harder to get what they want because the competition is much greater.
