I think depression is bullshit
    #4288478 - 06/12/05 09:32 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Depression shouldn't be classified as a disease, it should be classified as part of the human condition. I think medicating ourselves for being depressed sedates us to the point where we have no desire to grow, achieve or accomplish.

"You deserve to be happy" is a LIE!

being depressed over something isn't a disease. Being depressed irrationally for long periods of time is called a disease. Clinical depression is just extreme depression which might just be created by a chemical imbalance that has nothing to do with anything in reality that would depress you.

There are a LOT of reasons why people are depressed in life. What people tend to think of when they hear depression is a teenager who is faced with change who becomes depressed, someone who just lost their dog, or sometimes people who get depressed over trival reasons.

Many people will come out of the depression eventually. Teenagers grow up, people learn to accept loss, and people who need to get their way learn to deal.

But for many people, the depression remains even though there isn't an immediate reason to be depressed. This is a clinical problem which many people suffer from. My sister is chronically depressed, despite being a very mature, emotional wise person. To say that she is medicating herself to the point where she has no desire to grow or change is ignorant of her situation, not to mention very judgmental.

I myself have been depressed for extended periods of time. I take anti-depressents, which combined with psychotherapy and intense challenges and growth, have enabled me to work through the depression. I am currently pre-med, and have maintained a 3.3 GPA even with an extremely serious family illness during the past semester which took up most of my energy. I take anti-depressents and still have the desire to accomplish and grow.

In other words, the term depression is a very wide ranging phrase with different conotations. The real problem with classifying depression as a disease is that it can create a self-fulfilling prophecy in which a person can not escape the depression because they believe they are depressed.

--------------------
The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

Seeing as our brain is made up of chemicals, I would think someone who is depressed would have a certain "imbalance".

Still not a disease.

Clynical depression has nothing to do with your life and things that happen in it, it is an illness of the neural system, a chemical imbalance. I'm not sure on this, but I think it can be caused by often regular depression, but it continues even after regular depression is "solved". The rest of it is chemistry, and your mind trying to fight through it (if you want to)

how is that a lie? You deserve what you claim to deserve, the whole universe is dealed to you as a bunch of cards, you are here to take whatever you wish, abstract, material whatever, as long as you don't take it away from a fellow being.

Being happy is not something you get, it is a skill that you learn

I completely agree. People would like to treat the symptoms with drugs while ignoring the cause, and as long as they smile and feel good in the end, everything's fine.

But the truth is that depression is a natural reaction occuring in the brain. It is a warning signal to us just like pain that something in the environment or in our life is wrong, and that we should deal with it.

Giving medications for depression is like giving morphine to deal with cancer. We might deal with the symptoms, but in the long-term humanity is only weakening itself and ignoring essential biological conditions which are leading to such high rates of sustained, clinical depression.

Ah well, I'm not worried about it. Evolution and natural selection will eventually balance everything back out, as you can push the natural conditions of a species only so far before the blowback occurs.

Clinical depression is exactly what I think is BUNK. Psychologists whom I despise and their entire study have invented this nonsense. Twirling made a good point about a self-fulfilling prophecy with it being classified as a disease, but I think it goes beyond that. Citing reasons why you shouldn't be depressed and then still feeling the symptoms could very well be a problem of your mind... something psychology can't touch with a 10 foot pole.

there is no cause in clynical depression, that is the point, it is perfectly well treated with drugs

/sigh

and when your brain suffers damage so you're depressed for no reason? This isn't psychology, this is basic biochem.

If I have chronic pain in my arm and it won't go away no matter what, for years and years, am i to think it's just part of normal life? Sure, pain is. Chronic pain for no reason isn't.

there *ARE* some things which can be fixed with drugs, believe it or not.

That's what they tell you. But personally, looking at the almost ridiculous number of cases of clinical depression, looking at the hundreds of millions or more of antidepressants being handed out like candy, I know that's bullshit. Nature didn't create this many humans with depression that isn't created by the environment, there is obviously something else going on.

I believe some extreme cases of depression may be caused simply by neurological imbalances that have no environmental or personal causes, but millions of them? Mostly everyone knows that's not the case. I'd say the majority, if not the vast majority, of typical depression that we give people Prozac or Zoloft for are caused by their environment or themselves, and in that case we're not helping them at all in the long-term.
