Re: Oh No! Animal abuse in my neighborhood! [Re: Asante]
    #11449239 -

Ok, so here's an update.

This past week, I rode by on my bike twice and walked by a few more times during the night.  These assholes ARE fighting dogs in the neighborhood. On Wednesday night, I saw a bunch of cars outside the house and as I rode around the block I could see and hear the dogs fighting in the back yard.  I heard one guy say "Kill that motherfucker! Tear his neck out! Yeah!"

I heard dogs whimpering and crying.  I was so mad I didn't know what to do.  I think I might notify someone this week.  I just don't know what to do.

I can't believe they pull that shit in full view in a neighborhood.

You must have some shitty neighbors if no one's reported it yet. Definitely report that shit. It would be ideal for cops to show up in the midst of a fight, but whenever is fine.

I just wanted to update everyone that was concerned in the matter:  I did call the police about the situation.

Last week while coming home from school I noticed quite a few police cars in the neighborhood.... especially near the house I had mentioned earlier in the post.  I decided to chill out for a minute and then I rode my bike by the house to see if the cops were indeed there.  The cops were there along with 2 or 3 animal control trucks.  I believe the cops were interviewing neighbors about the dog fighting ring.  It appeared that there were maybe 3-5 different people in handcuffs in the back of the police cars.  The entire house was surrounded by police tape.

Later that evening, my roommate and I went up to the store for some beers and on the way back I asked if he could drive down the road with the cops.  When we drove by, there were police/government vans outside with people bringing boxes of stuff outside.  I don't know what was in the boxes, but there were at least 5 or 6 people loading these boxes into the vans.

After this whole ordeal, I think I want to take a trip to the local animal shelter an adopt a dog.  It doesn't necessarily have to be from the house that was raided (although I hope it is) but I just want to be able to give a good dog a second chance at life in a good home.

I just got back from a short bike ride around a few blocks just to kill some time while the coals were heating up in my grill, and I think I stumbled upon something terrible!  I think there is either a puppy mill or a dog fighting ring in my neighborhood!  While I was biking, I noticed the back yard of one house was filled with kennels or dog cages.  There was probably 20-25 of these "cages."  There were a lot of puppies barking, but I couldn't even see them because of the bushes that were in the way.  It sounded like at least 30-40 puppies maybe more.  The house and property don't look good at all (hell, the conditions don't even seem fit and I think I've seen a bunch of suspicious stuff going on there....  moreso than the norm.

I hopped off of my bike to try to get a closer look, but as I did several large dogs (maybe 5-7 dogs) came running to the fence and started barking ferociously.  Someone in the house noticed me and came out screaming like a maniac!  "What the hell do you think you're doing? Get the hell out of here."  Then he yelled something in spanish (or possibly italian) to someone else inside the house.  I quickly got back on my bike and rode home.

Well, I'm home now and I don't know what I should do.  Should I call the police, ASPCA, the Human Society, etc?  I don't think it's right for people to have these kinds of setup just to abuse animals.  Do I need to call in anonymously?  I don't want them finding out I called and coming to start trouble with me.

Any input/advice would be appreciated.

Call 911 and report it anonymously, they'll relay the necessary information to the right departments.

Yeah man... I can't have a dog because of my job/apartment, but I adopted a cat who was living in a tiny cage for over 5 months in a kill shelter (probably didn't have a lot of time left). She's cuddled up with me right now, awww.

If you have the resources and the dedication, adopting an animal is an awesome thing to do.
