I have no issue with humans eating animals, but I have a big problem with those who cause those animals unnecessary suffering. This company will feel it where it hurts them most: their profits.
Let's hope this kind of thing catches on nationally and forces slaughterhouses and others in the food-animal industry to use human methods.
--
The hamburger chains Jack-In-the-Box and In-N-Out as well more than 150 school districts around the nation have banned meat from a Chino slaughterhouse after a video showed workers brutalizing sick and crippled cows, officials said Friday.
The New York City public school system -- the nation's largest with 1.1 million students -- pulled all hamburgers from its menus.
School districts in at least 11 states have stopped using ground beef from Hallmark Meat Packing Co. and its associated Westland Meat Co. until a federal investigation is complete.
Inspectors were at the packing plant on Friday, USDA spokeswoman Angela Harless said.
No illnesses linked to the beef have been reported.
Jack in the Box, which has restaurants in 18 states, told its meat suppliers not to use Hallmark until further notice, spokeswoman Kathleen Anthony said.
"We definitely have very strict animal welfare guidelines that we expect our suppliers to follow," she said.
The San Diego-based company does not purchase meat directly from slaughterhouses, so it was unclear whether it had used any Hallmark meat, she said.
In-N-Out, an Irvine-based chain, also halted use of the beef, saying it would never condone the inhumane treatment of animals.
Hallmark did not immediately return a call seeking comment Friday. Westland President Steve Mendell said earlier in the week that the company was "shocked, saddened and sickened" by the video, had fired two workers shown in it and suspended their supervisor.
Westland sold more than 27 million pounds of beef last year for use in school lunch and other federal nutrition programs.
McDonald's Corp., the world's largest fast-food chain, said it does not do business with the slaughterhouse. Burger King, based in Miami, said it does not buy beef from the packing house and has "no connection to the supplier."
The videotape released Wednesday by The Humane Society of the United States showed slaughterhouse employees kicking, shocking, dragging and otherwise abusing "downer" cows -- those believed too sick or injured to walk.
The group urged Congress to pass bills requiring downed animals to be killed humanely and barred from being slaughtered for human consumption.
USDA regulations already prohibit use of disabled cows for human food because they may pose a higher risk of illnesses such as mad cow disease.
However, regulators said they were not immediately able to determine whether the workers were forcing downer cows into the slaughterhouse or dragging them out of the line.
Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer has said there was "no immediate health risk" from the meat but added his department had barred any more purchases or use of the slaughterhouse meat for federal programs until the probe was completed.

Video evidence compiled by The Humane Society of the United States shows inhumane handling methods that may have endangered the health of children.
A shocking undercover investigation by The Humane Society of the United States reveals widespread mistreatment of "downed" dairy cows—those who are too sick or injured to walk—at a Southern California slaughter plant.
The investigation at the Hallmark Meat Packing Co., of Chino, pulls open a curtain on the scandalous treatment of animals slaughtered to supply the National School Lunch Program and other federal aid programs.
Video evidence obtained by an HSUS investigator shows slaughter plant workers displaying complete disregard for the pain and misery they inflicted as they repeatedly attempted to force "downed" animals onto their feet and into the human food chain.
Cruelties that Defy Belief
In the video, workers are seen kicking cows, ramming them with the blades of a forklift, jabbing them in the eyes, applying painful electrical shocks and even torturing them with a hose and water in attempts to force sick or injured animals to walk to slaughter.
"This torture is right out of the waterboarding manual. To see the extreme cruelties shown in The HSUS video challenges comprehension," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS.
"This must serve as a five-alarm call to action for Congress and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Our government simply must act quickly both to guarantee the most basic level of humane treatment for farm animals and to protect America's most vulnerable people, our children, needy families and the elderly from potentially dangerous food."
Beef Distributed for School Lunches and the Needy
Hallmark's Chino, Calif., slaughter plant supplies the Westland Meat Co., which processes the carcasses. The facility is the second-largest supplier of beef to USDA's Commodity Procurement Branch, which distributes the beef to needy families, the elderly and also to schools through the National School Lunch Program. Westland was named a USDA "supplier of the year" for 2004-2005 and has delivered beef to schools in 36 states. More than 100,000 schools and child care facilities nationwide receive meat through the lunch program.
Hallmark Meat Packing has no connection to Hallmark Cards, Inc.
Temple Grandin, a renowned expert on animal agriculture and professor at Colorado State University, called the images captured in the investigation "one of the worst animal abuse videos I have ever viewed."
A Demand for Action
The HSUS recently completed its six-week undercover investigation at the federally-inspected slaughter plant. Videotape evidence and investigative background have been given to law enforcement authorities in San Bernardino County, Calif.
In releasing footage from the investigation, The HSUS demands that the USDA move swiftly to tighten its confusing regulations on the slaughter of downed cattle. Downer cows must not be used for food—plain and simple. As The HSUS video shows, this is necessary to protect animals from suffering. As science has made clear, this is necessary to protect food safety. The practice of slaughtering downed cows is especially troubling now that the link between downed cattle and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), also known as mad cow disease, has been firmly established. Of the 15 known cases of BSE-infected animals discovered in North America, at least 12 involved downed animals.
At the same time, The HSUS is urging Congress to intervene. The Farm Animal Stewardship Purchasing Act (H.R. 1726) would set modest animal welfare standards, including humane euthanasia of any downed animals, for producers who sell food to federal government programs, and the Downed Animal Protection Act (S. 394 and H.R. 661) would ban any slaughtering of downed animals for human consumption.

Video here:

WARNING: This video contains very graphic images.
An investigation by The Humane Society of the United States at a cattle slaughterhouse has documented that animals too sick or injured to stand or walk—called "downers" by industry—have been kicked, beaten, dragged with chains, shocked with electric prods, sprayed in the face with hoses and pushed by forklifts in efforts to get them to their feet to pass USDA inspection. This unacceptable cruelty potentially puts the food supply at risk—at least 12 of the 15 identified cases of mad cow disease in North America to date have reportedly been downers.
In spite of claims that downers were being eliminated from the food supply, downed animals may be falling through the cracks as a result of poor oversight, anemic enforcement, and a loophole created by inconsistent agency regulations. The result is a losing proposition for animals who are beaten, kicked and dragged to their death and consumers who unknowingly consume the meat from sick and injured animals.
TAKE ACTION Demand that the USDA eliminate this dangerous loophole and immediately put in place a "bright line" ban on all downers.
Public officials receive a lot of email, so it's important to personalize the subject line and message below so that your message will stand out and have a greater impact.

The Humane Society is playing this smart. Instead of pointing out that this is horrific treatment of the animals, they're pointing out that cutting into the hide of a living animal can introduce pathogens that could be harmful to the humans who eat it.
By playing to the "OMG I don't want to get sick" aspect of human psychology instead of the "OMG that poor animal" aspect, they reach more of us.
It's a sad statement about us. It shows that a lot of us humans are nasty, sadistic fucks and the only way to get many of us to even care about this issue is to scare us with the possibility of getting sick.
Humans suck. I sooo want off this planet.
